Sea Scan ARC Scout MKII Installation Guide
5 System Installation Guidelines
External Interference:
Our system is designed to amplify very small electrical signals and display them. Unfortunately, other
sources of electrical signals can be amplified and interfere with the image quality. These noise sources
need to be handled properly to reduce their affect on the system.
Typical noise sources include (but are not limited to):
· Radiated (RF)
· Power supply ripple
· Common mode ripple
The Sea Scan ARC Scout MkII has been designed with extensive shielding and filtering to minimize the
effect that noise sources have on the system's performance. Proper placement in the vehicle will further
reduce their effect on the system's performance. In most systems, the Sea Scan ARC Scout MkII is installed
in the main dry-housing along with the sonar computer. To help prevent radiated electrical noise from
affecting the sonar data, it is best to keep them as far away from other electronics as possible. Typically, the
electronics have been installed on the back-side of their grounded chassis to help shield them from other
active electronic noise sources.
Our newest transducers/electronics have a limit on the distance from the transducer electronics to the
transducer of ~2 meters. If longer distances are required, the system will still operate but the performance
may be degraded.
Guide Lines:
· Avoid placing the Sea Scan ARC Scout MkII near any active electronic devices such as DC-DC converters or
other sonar transmitters as this may cause noise to be introduced.
· Do not route any power wiring, particularly input and/or output connections to DC-DC converters, close
to the Sea Scan ARC Scout MkII, the Transducer Extension Cable, or the Transducers.
· Keep Transducer Extension Cable lengths to a minimum to improve the signal to noise ratio.
· Connect all power input leads on the power supply as this is required for proper operation.
Do not transmit without transducers connected to the Sea Scan ARC Scout MkII as this may
damage the electronics.
Thermal Management
The Sea Scan ARC Scout MkII system is equipped with internal heat sinks that transfer thermal energy to the
outer enclosure (primarily to the mounting surface). For maximum performance it is recommended that
the system is installed on an adequate thermal interface (generally an aluminum chassis plate is sufficient).
An optional cooling fan is available when the thermal interface is not adequate or the ambient
temperature is elevated. The system has automatic thermal monitoring and management capabilities and
will maintain the proper operating temperature through the adjustment of the transmit duty cycle.
However, reducing the duty cycle may result in a reduction of the transmit pulse strength.
