Appendix: Alternate Steps for Some Dusty Strings

Double-Strung Harps

More recent Dusty Strings double-strung harps may have round holes drilled in the span braces (see figure 10) to enable a

quick and easy harness installation. If your harp has this feature, we suggest following steps 4A through 6A. If your harp does

not have these holes, go back to page 4 and follow the standard harness installation steps (step 4 to the end).

Step 4A: Remove Grommets

e pickup harness has three rubber grommets attached to it, and you'll need to remove them in order to re-install

them in the next step. Using wire snips or a sharp blade, very carefully cut a single slice through each grommet with-

out slicing into the harness cable. You can then remove the grommets and they will keep their shape.

Step 5A: Feed Harness Through Holes in Braces

Starting from the bottom of the harp, feed the harness through the hole in each of the

three span braces. Carefully feed the pickup elements and their lead wires through as

well, being careful not to damage them. When you're done, the top element and lead

wire should be above the top brace, the middle element should be above the middle

brace, and the lowest element should be above the lowest brace.

Slide the harness up or down until the pickup elements can easily reach the pencil

marks you made in step 3 without stretching the lead wires.

Step 6A: Secure Harness

To secure the harness in each brace, you will use the rubber grommets you removed in

step 4A. Open a rubber grommet and fit it back onto the harness above the brace. Push

the grommet down into the hole in the brace until it feels snug. (See figure 10) Do this

for each brace.

If necessary, twist the harness so that the lead wires point towards the center of the

harp.

The upper end of the harness should float free without touching the sides or sound-

board. (See figure 11)

Now you are ready to glue down the pickup elements. Return to page 5, step 7 in the main

instructions.
