screen before
each st ar t -up and make sur e it is

and unobstructed.

dirt etc. start building up on int ake screen while
operating,

and clear
to prevent
overheating .

blower housing
by fins on the
flywheel
and is
circulated
past
cooling
fins on block and
heads
and i

en discharged

oward the power

ake-off
end of
the engine .

o not operate
with
mis s ing
cool in g shr ouds as
these direct cooling air--removal
would r
e-
sul t in improper air circulation and
possible
engi ne
damage
due t
o overhe ating.
Clean
external sur f ace s
of your
engine occasionally as
accumul at i on of dust, oil can contribute to improper cool ing .

Ignition system service
Engine misfire or generally poor operation is
often caused
by
spark plugs
in
poor
condition or with
incorrect
spark gap
setting. Always
clean area
around
spar k plu
gs
before r
emoving
to
prevent
dirt
f
rom
getting into engi ne .
Carefully note
spar k
plug
condi t i on as this is of t en
a good
indicator
of t
he igni
-
tion
troubl e.
Plugs fail for
various reasons.
The
porcelain insulator
m
ay
crack or become coat ed with
oi l , carbon or other
deposits.
Thi s can cause the hi
gh voltage
ignition
impulse
to
pass
from the center
electrode
t
o
ground without jumping the
spark gap.
As an engi ne
operates,
the
electrodes
are gradually
burned
or worn aw ay .
In time, the gap
becomes so
wi de that
t
he
available
ignition voltage cannot jump
th
e
gap and
the
engi ne
misses.
Operation
i
s also
gre atly
affected by
breaker point condi
tion
and
ad j l~ tment
of poi nt gap.
If
points
ar e
burned
or
badly oxidized, l
i t t le or
no
cur re nt will
pass
and
as
a
r
esul t the engine
may
not
operate
at all, or if it
does
run, it is
likely
to
miss particularly
at full
throttle.
SPARK PLUGS:
Ever
y
100 hours remove plugs, check
condition
and reset
gap
or repl ace pl ug if
needed
.
Good operating conditions
are
indicated
if plu
g
has
light
coat in g of
gray
or tan
deposit.
A
dead white,
blistered
coating coul d
indicate overheating.
A
black (carbon) coating
m
ay
i
ndicate
an "overricW' fuel
mixture caus
ed
by
cl ogged ai r cleaner or
improper
car bur e to r adjustment.

wire
brush,
scrape or
otherwise service
plug in
poor
