The INW-2 switches up to 2 pairs of 4 Ohm or higher impedance speakers in any
combination, while maintaining a safe load to the amplifier of 4 or 8 Ohms.
The load protection is achieved by use of an impedance matching transformer,
which offers several significant advantages. First, there is little or no heat developed
whether one or two speakers pairs are operating simultaneously, so no fire hazard exists
with the in-wall switcher. Second, all switching can be elegantly contained in a single in-wall junction
box without modification.
The INW-2 is normally supplied with the impedance matching jumper connected to the X2 position,
which multiplies the speaker impedance to 2 times the nominal value. Thus if 2 pairs of 4 Ohm speakers
are switched on at the same time, the parallel impedance load would be 2 Ohm. The transformer setting
multiplies the impedance by 2, so the total load to the amplifier appears as 4 Ohms. The jumper settings
can be adjusted to accommodate different situations.
The wiring diagram illustrates connections to the INW-2. Note that all the LEFT speaker and
amplifier LEFT channel connect to one side of the unit, and the RIGHT to the other. Wires should be
stripped about 1/4", inserted in the appropriate connector opening, and the screw tightened. Check to be
sure that no stray strands stick out to cause short circuits!
