GENERAL INFORMATION
The AT100S is a Low Grain Refrigerant (LGR) Dehumidifier, which is used to remove moisture
from air within a building envelope. The dried air will then extract moisture from wetted building
materials and building contents by circulating the dry air. "Low Grain" refers to the unit's ability
to remove moisture from air that is already very dry, as one grain of moisture represents

of a pound of water. "Refrigerant" refers to the principle of dehumidification. We use
vapor compression principles using refrigerant, as opposed to other approaches to
dehumidification, such as desiccant drying.
The standard rating point for rating the performance of a dehumidifier is 80ºF at 60% Relative
Humidity. This corresponds to a Specific Humidity of 92.5 grains of moisture per pound of dry air
if measured at sea level. What sets LGR dehumidifiers apart from standard dehumidifiers is that
they are capable of removing water from air at 80ºF at 20% Relative Humidity, which is very dry.
This corresponds to 30.4 grains of moisture per pound of dry air if measured at sea level.
The unit draws air in through the grille located in the top of the unit. The air is dehumidified as it
moves through the various stages within the unit, as depicted in Figure 1. The dehumidified air
is then discharged out the front of the unit, close to the floor. Water removed from the air is
delivered to an automatically controlled pump within the unit, which provides the pressure to
pump the water to a remote location via 35 feet of vinyl tubing supplied. The maximum
allowable lift to maintain an acceptable rate of flow from the pump is 19 feet. The maximum lift
at zero flow at rated voltage is 20 feet.
As the inlet air temperature and/or humidity drops, a point will be reached where the surface
temperature of the evaporator will be below freezing and the water will accumulate as frost on
the evaporator surface. Periodic defrosting will be required to melt the frost and to direct the
water run-off to the pump. As to when defrosting takes place, this is automatically determined
and controlled by the unit.
The AT100S can be operated in environments between 33°F and 100°F (0.6 and 38°C). Within
this temperature range, the unit will regulate its operation as necessary, depending on
conditions. Below 40°F, the unit may continue to dehumidify effectively, depending on the
humidity load. For example, if the air temperature is 34°F (1°C), but the air is very dry, the unit
will operate for a few minutes, and then shut down on the "too cold" alarm. However, if the
space can be warmed with heaters, with air being circulated by fans, it will greatly speed up the
drying process by increasing the evaporation rate of water out of the building materials. Optimal
drying temperatures range somewhere between 66 and 85°F (19 and 29.5°C).
TRANSPORTING THE AT100S
The AT100S should be transported upright. When transporting the unit, there is the possibility of
water spillage out of the pump reservoir or water drainage off of the wetted evaporator coil. It is
therefore important to make effective use of the manual purge button to evacuate the water out
of the pump reservoir before moving the unit. After the OFF button has been depressed, it is
recommended that a manual purge be initiated by depressing the PURGE button. Then wait at
least 15 minutes for the water to shed off the evaporator and find its way into the pump
reservoir. Initiate another manual purge to clear the pump reservoir of any residual water one
last time before moving the unit. Disconnect and fully drain the 35 foot vinyl drain hose before
coiling it up and storing it under the top cover.
