IMAGING PROCESSOR
The backbone of a good digital camera is the
signal processing technology that renders and
writes your images to the memory card. Developed
to maximize performance between the capture
and recording aspects of digital photography,
Canon's DIGIC (Digital Imaging Integrated Circuit)
chip applies proprietary signal processing
algorithms to yield dramatic improvements in
image quality and camera responsiveness. This
ultra-high-performance imaging engine speeds
up the processing, compression, and display
and write times for each captured image, all
with low power consumption, saving valuable
battery power. The latest-generation ≥II
processor works in concert with Canon's
newest CMOS sensor to achieve even higher
levels of performance. New signal processing
algorithms work with the multichannel signal
from the sensor and the high-speed DDR
SDRAM (Double Data Rate Synchronous
Dynamic Random Access Memory) buffer to
deliver dramatically improved camera response.
Power consumption has been further
reduced for even longer battery
life. Color reproduction, too, is
significantly better, with more
natural rendition of bright,
high-saturation subjects
and more precise auto
white balance. Color
accuracy and noise
performance in
low light have
also been much
improved.
CMOS SENSORS
Canon has developed its own CMOS
(Complementary Metal-oxide Semiconductor)
sensor to record digital images, taking advantage
of the proprietary know-how gained during the
development and manufacturing of its renowned
autofocus sensors and semiconductor
manufacturing equipment. Compared to CCD
sensors which amplify signals only after they
have been transferred to an image processor,
CMOS sensors convert and amplify signals before
they are transferred. Using this method together
with additional proprietary technology, Canon's
CMOS sensors produce a cleaner signal from
the beginning. At the same time, power
consumption is reduced by up to 90% compared
to CCDs, and data transfer speeds can be
significantly increased via multi-channel readouts.
In addition, Canon's CMOS sensors incorporate
a unique on-chip noise reduction technology to
deal with both fixed
pattern and random
noise, resulting in
silky-smooth, film-like
images, with limited
power consumption,
at breathtaking speed.
CANON EF LENSES
All EOS Digital Cameras are compatible with the
full line of EF lenses and EOS system accessories.
With advanced technologies like high-speed
Ultrasonic focusing and Image Stabilization, as
well as a host of different zoom ranges, EF lenses
are the perfect complement to a Digital EOS.
Canon's Speedlite flash units with Canon's E-TTL
flash exposure system, and numerous other
accessories make EOS one of the most comprehensive
photographic systems available today.

While much technical discussion of digital cameras
centers around the optics and the CCD sensor,
the complex task of image rendering is the job
of the image processor–the "brains" of a digital
camera. Canon's latest,
exclusive DIGIC Imaging
Processor significantly
enhances digital camera
performance in numerous
areas. DIGIC's high-speed
signal processing is combined with high-capacity
buffering to give Canon digital cameras fast
response and continuous shooting capability
unmatched by other digital cameras. DIGIC delivers
longer battery life and beautiful, rich color rendition
with far fewer white saturation problems. And
DIGIC's unequaled precision delivers clear,
noise-free images that are demonstrably superior.
iSAPS TECHNOLOGY
Canon iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based
on Photographic Space) technology dramatically
improves the performance of AF (Autofocus), AE
(Auto Exposure), and AWB (Auto White Balance).
By analyzing a huge volume of photography data,
accumulated over 60 years and the manufacture
of over 150 million cameras, Canon engineers
arrived at statistical relationships among focal
length, focus distance, scene brightness, and
other factors. Equipped with this "fore knowledge"
Canon PowerShot cameras can optimize AF/AE/
AWB settings for any given scene more rapidly
and more effectively.

MULTI-POINT AiAF
Canon's wide-area AiAF intelligently and
automatically selects one or more focusing
points based on factors, such as subject position
and motion. AiAF works in conjunction with iSAPS
Technology to more quickly and accurately achieve
autofocus under a wide variety of shooting conditions.
You get fast, accurate AF whether you hold the
camera horizontally or
vertically, with stationary
or moving subjects, with
off-center subjects, and
even in low-light/low-
contrast lighting.
IMAGE STABILIZER*
The Canon Image Stabilizer uses gyroscopic
sensors to detect motion and generate a corrective
signal to reduce blur caused by camera movement.
An image-stabilizing lens group along the optical
axis is shifted in response to the detected
motion, providing effective cancellation of
unwanted lens movement and vibration. Result –
in still photography, long lenses can be hand
held at slower shutter speeds without blurred
images, and handheld video footage is smoother.

VGA FINE MOVIE*
PowerShot raises the bar further still, giving
the user the ability to capture smooth full-
motion (30 frame-per-second) video at full VGA
resolution (640 x 480 pixels). The user can
even choose VGA-Fine recording at this frame
rate, which yields even better picture quality
by lowering the compression rate. This
advanced movie mode also offers improved
sound quality, recording at 16-bit quantization
and a 22kHz sampling rate (compared to 8-
bit/11kHz for previous models).
*Available only in the PowerShot S1 IS.
