Flying with a wet glider
Flying with a completely wet wing raises the
risk of deep stall. Deep stall is often the re-
sult of a combination of factors. A wet can-
opy weighs more. The increased weight re-
sults in a higher angle of attack, always
bringing the wing closer to the deep stall
boundary. Water drops on the fabric also
have a bad effect on the laminar boundary
layer near the leading edge, and this signif-
icantly lowers the maximum lift coefficient
achievable.
To avoid the risk of deep stall with a wet
wing the glider should be braked as little as
possible, and big ears never used. If the glid-
er still goes into deep stall recovery can only
be made by accelerating with the trimmers.
