Benefits of the new solution

High availability in the core of the St Swithun's network is
provided by the SwitchBlade's built in redundancy in switching
capacity, control and power supply, guaranteeing maximum uptime
and throughput of network traffic.

As the school network makes use of wireless access, security is
crucial to provide a stable and protected environment. This has
been achieved using 802.1x port authentication on the edge
switches to control access to only known and trusted computers.
802.1x port authentication controls access to the network by
forcing computers to authenticate before being able to gain
access to network resources. Additionally, computers are given
controlled network access, based on their authentication details.
The switches Dynamic VLAN functionality can logically segment
traffic by placing computers in different virtual networks.

The Allied Telesis solution provides comprehensive security on all
switches and wireless components, with 802.1x automating the
management of personal computer use on the network. This
provides students the opportunity to use their own computers
on the school network without huge overheads in time and
resource for the IT department. The result: a secure and easily
manageable solution.
"St Swithun's required a secure and resilient solution that was easy to
manage, " commented Richard Hoare. "Allied Telesis was the obvious
choice as their products offer secure and easily manageable solutions."

Traffic bottlenecks have been significantly reduced with all edge
switches having a 1GB uplink to the core switch. This architecture
radically improves reliability and traffic network bandwidth – great
for high-density traffic like streaming video or large graphics files.
Capital and operational costs are greatly reduced with better
performance and a topology able to change to meet future needs
is provided. The addition of a 10Gbps core will keep the St
Swithun's IT infrastructure at the forefront of education networks,
with the ultimate in performance.

Key decision factors
The most appealing features about Allied Telesis's solution, from
the customer's perspective, were the functionality of the modular
design and the attractive price point. Schools face a constant
struggle between managing cost constraints and ensuring that
their networks are robust enough to support new bandwidth-
intensive applications. Allied Telesis' state-of-the-art Ethernet and
IP-based solutions were significantly less expensive to purchase
and deploy than those of its competitors.
St Swithun's recommends Allied Telesis
Allied Telesis is proud of the upgraded functionality and simplified
management provided for St Swithun's network upgrade.
"The Allied Telesis solution is now an integral component of our
infrastructure and provides the backbone for all our network services.
It has allowed us to achieve everything we had set out to achieve –
and at a very competitive price. " Adam King, Head of IT Services at
St Swithun's School
