Installing a 3.5" 720KB FDD in the Apex Plus
Date: 4/19/89
Page: 1 of 1
The newer version of the Apex Plus User's Guide states that the 3.5", 720KB
FDD is not supported however, the system has been tested with and does
support the Epson 3.5", 720KB drive (Model Code A112A - AA).
Installing the 3.5" 720KB drive as drive B:
Ensure the Drive Select jumper on the 3.5" FDD is set to DS1. Replace the
lower floppy drive with the -new 3.5" FDD. If the new FDD does not slide
easily into the lower drive slot, then the top drive and the FDD chassis will
have to be removed. The FDD chassis is held in with 1 screw on each side
of the chassis at the front behind the front panel. After these 2 screws are
removed, the disk drive chassis can be removed be lifting up and forward out
of the retaining slots at the bottom. The 3.5" FDD can then be installed in the
lower position and the FDD chassis can then be reinstalled in the computer.
The top 5.25" FDD can then be installed and the system booted up with MS-
DOS. In order for the system to recognize the B: drive as a 3.5", 720KB FDD,
a CONFIG.SYS file with the following statement must be created or added to
the existing CONFIG.SYS file:
Installing the 3.5" 720KB drive as drive A:
If installing the 3.5" 720 as drive A: it must first be installed as drive B: and
a 3.5" MS- DOS system disk must be created.
MS - DOS system disk in drive A:. Insert a blank 3.5" diskette in drive B then
use FORMAT B:/S to format and copy the system files to the 3.5" diskette.
Use COPY A:*.* B: to copy all the other MS - DOS files from the 5.25" diskette
to the 3.5" diskette.
3.5", 720KB FDD, a CONFIG.SYS file with the following statement must be
made or added to the existing CONFIG.SYS file:
There are no dip switches or jumpers to change on the computer, but the
drive select jumper on both floppy disk drives must be set to DS1.
The 5.25" FDD can then be installed as the lower B: drive and the 3.5" FDD
can be installed as drive A:.
