CONFIGURATION GUIDE
Important Safety Information
See the Important Safety and Product Information guide in the
product box for product warnings and other important

You are responsible for the safe and prudent operation of your
vessel. The autopilot is a tool that enhances your capability to
operate your boat. It does not relieve you of the responsibility of
safely operating your boat. Avoid navigational hazards and
never leave the helm unattended.
Always be prepared to promptly regain manual control of your
boat.
If your motor features a kill switch, you should know how to
operate it in case of an emergency. If your motor does not
feature a kill switch, you should install one before installing the
autopilot system.
Learn to operate the autopilot on calm and hazard-free open
water.
Use caution when operating the autopilot near hazards in the
water, such as docks, pilings, and other boats.
When in use, beware of hot surfaces on the heat-sink, motor,
and solenoid components.
When in use, beware the risk of entrapment or pinching from
moving parts.
Failure to install and maintain this equipment in accordance with
these instructions could result in damage or injury.
Configuring the Autopilot
The autopilot system must be configured and tuned to your boat
dynamics. The Dockside Wizard and the Sea Trial Wizard are
used to configure the autopilot. These wizards walk you through
the necessary configuration steps.
If your autopilot package did not contain a helm control, you
must configure the autopilot system using a compatible
chartplotter on the same NMEA 2000
CCU. Instructions for configuration using either the helm control
or a chartplotter are provided.
Dockside Wizard
If you perform the Dockside Wizard while your boat is out of the
water, provide rudder-movement clearance to avoid damage to
the rudder or other objects.
You can complete the Dockside Wizard while the boat is in or
out of the water.
If the boat is in the water, it must be stationary while you
complete the wizard.
Performing the Dockside Wizard

Turn on the autopilot.
The first time you turn on the autopilot, you are prompted to
complete a short setup sequence.

If the Dockside Wizard does not start automatically after the
setup sequence, select an option:

Select the Power Displacement Hull vessel type.

Enter the maximum speed value for your kicker motor.
The maximum speed value should be the maximum speed of
the boat when using the kicker motor only.

Enter 6000 as the maximum RPM value for your kicker
motor.

After you complete the Dockside Wizard, you must disable the
Shadow Drive
™
valve in the settings. This autopilot system is not
compatible with the Shadow Drive valve, and an error message
appears until you disable it.
Testing the Steering Direction

While sitting still or moving at a low rate of speed, select
and

When you select
, the motor must turn the boat to the left.
When you select
, the motor must turn the boat to the right.

Select Continue.

Select an option:
• If the steering test turns the boat in the correct direction,
on a helm control, select Yes.
• If the steering test turns the boat in the correct direction,
on a chartplotter, select Next.
• If the steering test turns the boat in the opposite direction,
on a helm control, select No, and repeat steps 1 though 3.
• If the steering test turns the boat in the opposite direction,
on a chartplotter, select Switch Direction, and repeat
steps 1 though 3.
Selecting a Speed Source
Select an option:
• If you connected the spark plug wire on the throttle
actuator to a spark plug cable on the motor, select
Tachometer - NMEA 2000.
• If you did not connect the spark plug wire on the throttle
actuator, select GPS as a speed source.
NOTE: Garmin
recommends using an external GPS
®
antenna mounted with a clear view of the sky to provide
reliable and accurate GPS speed information.
• If you did not connect the spark plug wire on the throttle
actuator, or do not have a GPS device as a speed source,
select None.
NOTE: If the autopilot does not perform well using None
as the speed source, Garmin recommends connecting the
spark plug wire on the throttle actuator or using an
external GPS antenna as the speed source.
Verifying the Tachometer
This procedure does not appear when GPS or None is selected
as the speed source.
Select Continue.
Due to the design of a kicker motor, there is no need to verify
the tachometer for use with the autopilot systme, and
therefore no information is shown on this screen.
