3RB22 / 3RB24 Motor Protection Device and 3RB29
Current Measurement Module for Potentially Explosive Areas
Safety and Commissioning Instructions
Read and understand these instructions before installing,
operating, or maintaining the equipment.
DANGER
!
Hazardous voltage.
Will cause death or serious injury.
Disconnect power before working on equipment.
CAUTION
Reliable functioning of the equipment is only ensured with
certified components.
1. General
Notes and standards
Due to the heightened risk in potentially explosive areas, the following
notes and standards have to be observed carefully:
• EN 60079-14 / VDE 0165 for electrical apparatus for explosive gas
atmospheres
• EN 60079-17 Electrical installations inspection and maintenance in
explosive atmospheres.
• EN 50495 Safety devices required for the safe functioning of
equipment with respect to explosion risks.
All 3RB22/3RB24 evaluation modules with 3RB29 current measuring
module are approved under device group II, category (2) in area "G"
(environments where there are potentially expolsive gas, vapor, mist
and air mixtures) or for area "D" (environments with combustible dust).
3RB22 / 3RB24 and 3RB29 devices are not designed for use in hazard-
ous areas. When used in potentially explosive areas, 3RB22 / 3RB24
and 3RB29 devices must be adapted according to the respective igni-
tion protection type.

WARNING
!
All connection, installation and maintenance work must be carried
out by qualified, responsible specialists. Improper behavior can
lead to severe personal injury or property damage.
2. Installation and Commissioning
NOTICE
Please observe the operating instructions (supplied with the
device)
• 3RB22 (order No.: 3ZX1012-0RB22-1AA1)
• 3RB29 (order No.: 3ZX1012-0RB00-1AA1)
• 3RB24 (order No.: 3ZX1012-0RB24-1AA1)
2.1 Setting the motor rated current
Set the 3RB22 to the rated current of the motor (according to the name
plate or the type approval certificate of the motor).
CAUTION
Observe the trip class and the tripping characteristics of the
3RB22 / 3RB24. Select the trip class so that the motor is thermi-
cally protected even when the rotor stalls.
The motor, the lines and the contactors must be designed for the
selected trip class.

2.2 Thermistor input
Type A temperature sensors with a characteristic curve complying with
EN 60947-8, DIN 44081 and DIN 44082 can be connected to the
3RB22 / 3RB24 evaluation module. Depending on the number of sen-
sors, the following tripping and re-start temperatures arise:
Typical characteristic curve of a type A sensor
Depending on the number of sensors, the following tripping and re-start
temperatures arise in reference to the TNF (rated sensor operating
temperature):

TNF + 4 K
6 sensors
TNF - 5 K
The temperatures stated are limit values.
NOTICE
The device has automatic thermistor activation. If a thermistor is
connected during the first commissioning, the thermistor evalua-
tion is activated. The thermistor evaluation is not active when
the thermistor LED blinks every 10 seconds!
The configuration test (see "User test") can also be used to check
whether or not the thermistor evaluation has been activated.
