This section describes how to replace the SDRAM DIMMs in the router. You might need to upgrade
the SDRAM DIMMs for the following reasons:

You have upgraded to a new Cisco IOS feature set or release that requires more memory.
You are using very large routing tables or many protocols (for example, when the router is set up
as a connection device between large external networks and your internal network).
Socket DIMM 1 and socket DIMM 2 hold system and packet memory SDRAM DIMMs. System
memory is used by the CPU to store the operating configuration, routing tables, caches, and
queues. The DIMMs can be 64 MB or 128 MB, and the capacity of the DIMM in slot DIMM 1
must be greater than or equal to the capacity of the DIMM in slot DIMM 2.
Socket DIMM 0 holds a packet memory SDRAM DIMM. Packet memory is used to store
incoming and outgoing packets. This DIMM is fixed at 64 MB.
