Expectation Setting Document for
Digital Front End for MajestiK, Regal, DocuColor 5750, and DocuColor 5799
Features
The Splash PCI Series v6.0 server contains the same features as the version 5.x server such as Color Correction,
Print Job Pre-flighting, and Rip-While-Print. However, the Splash PCI Series v6.0 has added additional features,
such as the following:
Text Enhancement: Text Enhancement has three options, that when enable, improves the printing of text and line
drawings.
Dynamic Edge Smoothing – Enhanced printing of text and drawings that contain fine lines.
Black Overprints – 100% black overprint, no knockout of underlying colors.
Alternative Black (mixed) - Substitutes black toner for any RGB black in the document.
Variable Data Support: The Splash Server supports high-speed color printing of variable data jobs from PrintShop
Mail version 3.1 to 4.0. The feature is available on the PCI 1280 PCI Server only. Jobs must be sent using the
"Copypage" option in PrintShop Mail. In versions of PrintShop Mail prior to 4.0, only a single master page is
supported using the Copypage feature. Splash supports the "Forms" option from PrintShop Mail. In general, this will
be considerably slower than the Copypage option, however this option does support transparent variable data.
Splash does not support transparent variable data using the Copypage option.
OHP Color Correction: Two Color Reference Dictionaries (CRDs) have been added for transparencies. There is a
"Graphic OHP" CRD and a "Photographic OHP" CRD. These CRDs will be automatically applied when the user
selects Transparency as the Bypass Tray option.
PostScript 3: The Splash PCI Series v6.0 is a true Adobe PostScript 3 controller and includes support for printing.
Duplex Alignment: (Splash PCI Series v6.0 supports manual duplex only) This command allows the operator to
enter vertical and horizontal offsets, which are applied to all duplex jobs. Offsets are entered in pixels (1/400ths of
an inch). When offsets are entered, the second side is shifted on the output for all duplex jobs. This may result in
clipping of the image for some duplex jobs. Duplex alignment may have to be performed more than once on long
run jobs.
Upgrade Strategy
Feature Upgrade Kit: Splash PCI Series v5.x servers can be upgraded with software only to have the features and
functions of Splash v6.0 servers.
The following values indicate average productivity changes. Actual productivity changes depend on the
complexity of the document:
Document mode off: Productivity increase – 5%
Document mode on: Productivity decrease – 15%
G3 Processor Upgrade Kit: This kit upgrades the Macintosh 604e processor to a G3 processor and is for those
customers who have already upgraded their Splash PCI Series v5.x servers with the v6.0 Feature Upgrade Kit. The
G3 processor has not been qualified for use with v5.x software.
The following values indicate average productivity changes. Actual productivity changes depend on the
complexity of the document:
Document mode off: Productivity increase – 2%
Document mode on: Productivity increase – 5%
Sorter Options
The sorter does not support transparencies.
Calibration
Splash PCI Series v6.0 supports ColorCal via the printer's ScanBack feature. The calibration process is simple and
verifiable. Splash ColorCal software has been optimized for use with the printer's scanner and Splash PCI Series
v6.0.
