IBM SWG Appliances – VPD and Firmware Updates
Summary
The BoMCsft4 tool now contains special procedures to update the VPD, Asset Tag and custom firmware blocks for the IBM SWG
QRadar, Guardium and NowFactory Appliances.
BoMCsft4 supports Lenovo Think Server M/T 7Z71 & 7Z73
The tools will attempt to auto-detect the appliance and the type if possible. It will rely primarily on the information stored in Asset
Tag field.
Therefore, it is important to properly update the Appliance VPD, including Asset Tag after a planar is
understand how it works, review the following tutorial prior to working on an IBM SWG appliance.
Updating System VPD and Appliance VPD
The Lenovo ThinkSystem VPD consists of the SMBIOS settings: Machine Type, Model, and Serial Number. The SWG Appliance
will use the original Lenovo hardware values in the VPD fields. The Appliance VPD will be stored in the Asset Tag field.
In the VPD information, the Produce Name (SysInfoProdName) will contain the 4-digit Type and the 6-digit model. The Serial
Number (SysInfoSerialNum) contains the 8-digit serial number. The Asset Tag (SysEncloseAssetTag) contains the 4-digit Appliance
Type, the 3-digit Appliance Model, and the 7-digit Appliance Serial, with no spaces. Reference Figure 6.
For example: a QRadar XX05 is based on a 7Z71 Lenovo ThinkSystem
The ThinkSystem Produce Name is: 7Z71S7KS00
The ThinkSystem Produce Name is the 8-digit Lenovo Serial Number
The Asset Tag is the Appliance VPD: 4723Q7BSSSSSSS (where SSSSSSS is the IBM Appliance serial number)
From the LXPM POST menu, press F12 to select the boot device.
Leave the Legacy box blank to boot the USB key with UEFI
The USB device should be at the bottom of the list. You may have to scroll down to see it. Select the USB key to boot the BoMCsft4.
The BoMCsft4 tool will boot to this menu (Blue Menu). *NOTE VPD should be updated first. To update the VPD after a system
board replacement the technician will select option 4
