The Recovery
•
Clear all people around the recovery area at least 1.5 times the length of the un-
stretched strap away from the vehicles in all directions. Ideally people other than the
driver of the two vehicles should position themselves behind a tree, large rock or over
a ridge completely away from any chance of a projectile harming them and NEVER
place themselves in the path of the vehicle performing the recovery.
•
Establish communication between the two drivers and discuss a stop point once the
recovery has been completed.
•
The recovery vehicle is to commence a gentle acceleration towards approx. 10kph –
15kph, the vehicle needing assistance (stranded vehicle) should assist at this point by
being in 1st gear or (2nd Low) and accelerate gently and progressively as the recovery
vehicle takes up the slack of the snatch strap.
•
If the first attempt is not successful repeat the steps adding a bit more speed each
attempt until a successful recovery is achieved.
NB- If after several attempts and the recovery is still unsuccessful allow the snatch strap to rest
and resume its original length before continuing. At this stage it is recommended to review the
approach of the recovery and assess if other methods can be applied.
•
Ensure the recovered vehicle does not drive over the snatch strap which may result in
damaging the strap.
•
Remove snatch strap when both vehicles are stationary and park brake applied.
