GENERAL WARNINGS
•
Mild and moderate supports can be easily worn during sports and other
daily activities to provide stabilization and help your wrist perform
better.
•
In carpal tunnel syndrome cases a wrist splint is a helpful short-term
treatment. But long-term use can cause your muscles to weaken.
During and after a period of splint use, exercise and slowly increase
your hand and wrist movements. This will help prevent your wrist
muscles from weakening.
•
You want to tighten the straps on the splints so that they are secure
but not too tight. You should be able to bend your wrist forward and
backwards a tiny bit, but it should mostly be locked in a neutral
position.
•
Use your wrist brace whenever you do activities that involve extensive
use of your hand. These actions can include computer work, household
chores, cooking or carpentry.
•
Take a break from using your hand and remove the wrist brace. You
should spend at least 10 minutes of every hour resting your hand and
moving your wrist in different directions.
•
Wear your wrist brace while sleeping if you tend to wake up with carpal
tunnel pains. Some people have a tendency to roll around in their
sleep and lie on their hands. A brace will prevent your wrist from
staying bent. Fit the brace looser while you sleep since it will be on for
about eight hours.
•
Buy a wrist rest to put in front of your keyboard to support both of
your hands while you use the computer. It's important to take steps to
prevent the development of carpal tunnel syndrome in both your
wrists.
•
Have your splint fitted or created by an expert, such as an occupational
therapist. If it's possible, you may want to try several kinds. Or if one
just doesn't fit or isn't functional for you, the therapist may be able to
modify it or add padding.
•
Ask questions and make sure the OT or other professional understands
what you want to get out of wearing it and your concerns about
wearing or caring for it. BUT, also listen to his/her advice and
instructions, even if it isn't what you want to hear.
•
When having a working splint fitted, try to think about specific
activities (like dressing or driving) that you will need to be able to do.
Simulate those activities to make sure that the splint isn't rubbing,
pinching or is too uncomfortable.
•
Remember that you may need to modify the way you grip something
or do a task with the splint on and work or adapting the splint to your
daily activities.
•
Get the wearing instructions and advice (length of time each day,
activities, how to wash or care for the splint, etc) in writing from the
health care professional who prescribed the splint.
•
If you know that you'll be doing activities with it, like cleaning or
washing dishes, that will get it wet or dirty, then you may want to have
two identical splints that you can interchange.
•
Keep a log of your splint usage and write down questions or problems
to share with your doctor or therapist
•
The splint should offer firm wrist support. That support should
immobilize the hand and wrist, and should extend at least one-third
onto the forearm. The splint should support the wrist in the neutral
position, which is approximately in a straight line with the forearm.
•
If the tendonitis is associated with deQuervain's syndrome, it generally
is necessary to use a splint with a thumb support to immobilize it.
•
The more versatile splints are open down their length so the hand and
arm can easily be slipped inside and secured, with Velcro straps, like all
2S splints. Glove-like splints generally do not offer adequate wrist
support, and can be more painful to use if the tendonitis is severe. The
splint should be comfortable. If it is painful or irritating then it should
be adjusted, especially if it seems to constrict any blood flow.
Do not over-tighten the straps. If there are any signs of swelling, pain or
skin irritation, discontinue immediately and consult a medical
professional.
•
These supports should only be used for the intended purpose in the
manner described in this manual. No liability is accepted for improper

Daily Activities
These supports are designed to provide comfortable support for general use.
Consult your physician regarding daily activities that you are allowed to
practice, depending on your condition.
Driving
It is not advisable to drive while wearing these supports (unless we are talking
about the mild support braces), still depending on your condition; your
physician should instruct you on this.
Sleeping
Splinting at night is almost always a good strategy for resting the wrist. At
night we bend and twist the hand unconsciously and this only aggravates
tendonitis. Splint immobilization inhibits exaggerated and harmful movements.
Showering
Remove the support when showering, unless your doctor tells you to keep it on
at all times.
