Glossary
RDS Receiving
What is RDS?
RDS (Radio Data System) is a broadcasting
service which allows stations to send
additional information along with the
regular radio programme signal.
There is a growing number of FM stations
that provide RDS services (RDS works only
on the FM band), and a variety of different
RDS services are now available.* One
convenient RDS service is "enhanced
othernetworks" (or "EON"). This allows
the tuner to automatically switch to a
programme type of your choice when one
starts in your broadcast area.
The list below explains the different types
of RDS services that the tuner can receive.
(The letters in parentheses show the RDS
code names for the service.)
Note
RDS may not operate correctly if the station
to which you are tuned is not transmitting
properly or if the broadcast is weak.
* Not all FM stations provide RDS service,
nor do all RDS stations provide the same
services. If in doubt, check with your
local radio stations for details on RDS
services in your area.
Program Service Name (PS)
Identifies each station by a name. This
allows you to locate a station by its
commonly known name without having to
know its assigned frequency (for example,
WDR instead of 103.8 MHz).
Traffic-Program Identification (TP)
Identifies programmes that carry traffic
announcements. This allows you to find out
the latest traffic conditions in your area
before leaving home. You can use the tuner
to automatically search for stations on
which traffic programmes are broadcast.
Traffic-Announcement
Identification (TA)
Indicates that a traffic announcement is
being broadcast in your area, even if the
station you are listening to is not
broadcasting the traffic programme. This
allows you to quickly tune in a station that
is currently broadcasting a traffic report.
You can use the tuner to automatically
search for stations on which traffic
programmes are currently being broadcast.
For the customers in the C.1.S.
RDS services are not broadcasted in the
CLS. .
