the treatment of Varroosis in honey bees (Apis
mellifera).
Mode of Action
Formic acid is delivered slowly and steadily
through the calibrated opening in the dropper
to the reservoir on the base plate. By capillary
action the acid is distributed evenly over the sur-
face of the paper-wick. The intensity of evapora-
tion is controlled by the size of the paper-wick.
Sizing of Paper-Wick
Respect the instructions printed on the paper-
wick, green for formic acid
and red for

Initial Sizing: Determine hive type and size and
the expected maximum teperatures for the first
days of treatment. Consult your local weather
forecast! At the point of intersection you see the
recommended volume for the first or the second
treatment. Reduce the size of a paper-wick to the
recommended size by folding the paper along the
perforated lines and by removing excess paper.
Average daily evaporation can be determined
dividing dosage by duration of treatment, e.g.

The paper is being folded along the fine perfora-
ted lines and excess paper is being removed. As
long as there is formic acid in the bottle, evapo-
ration will be constant. The treatment is finished
as soon as the paper dries.

day for the second treatment.
Adjusting when evaporation is too high: Is
the daily consumption too high or you find the
bees bearding up in front of the hive reduce the
paper-wick(s) by removing one strip.
Adjusting when evaporation is too low: Add
a second paper-wick of identical size ontop of
the already wet paper-wick increasing capillary
effect. The paper-wick will soak faster and more
formic acid will be transported to the edges.
Instructions for a Treatment

Insert dropper. Secure the bottle for trans-

at ambient temperature.
4.
Size paper-wick respecting your hive size
and type and expected maximum daily tem-
peratures.
5.
Place base plate in the center ontop the
4
brood frames and add paper-wick. Place the
base plate horizontal and firm to prevent spil-
ling of formic acid from reservoir.
6.
Place bottle carefully without pressure with
opening on top of the fixing prongs. Formic
acid drips to the reservoir and is absorbed by
the paper.
IMPORTANT:
acid to avoid spilling due to acid warming to
hive temperature.
Check flow of acid by slight tilting of bottle.
7.
Close the hive.
Close bottom board. Open flight entrance in
8.
commercial colonies. For nuclei leave flight
opening unchanged to prevent robbery.
9.
Check evaporated volume and adjust paper-
wick if required at the earliest after one day.
Once the bottle is empty and the paper dry
remove Liebig -Dispenser from hive.

The treatment with formic acid and the Liebig-
Dispenser is proven bee-safe for one and two
storey hives and the Swiss hive. Open brood and
emerging bees are very sensitive to formic acid.
Dose
Treat
Important:
Keep dispenser horizontal.
Do not use chilled formic acid to avoid spil-
ling of acid due to acid warming to hive tem-
perature.
With expected high daily temperatures start
treatment preferably in the early hours.
To reduce stress for the bees do not start
the treatment shortly before thunderstorms
or heavy rains.
Use only after honey harvest for best honey
quality.
Do not treat and feed simultaneously to pre-
vent absorption of formic acid by fresh food
Do not used chilled
and to prevent robbery.
