E. OPERATION
Shake the bubble mixture. Fill the tray with bubble mixture. Switch on the motor.
Watch as the Bubble Robotʼs arm dips into the mixture and the Robot blows clouds
of bubbles.
F. TROUBLESHOOTING
If the motor does not run:
• Check that you are using fresh batteries.
• Check that the batteries are inserted correctly in the battery case.
• Check that all four wires are touching the metal terminal caps.
• Check that all the gears and hinges are lubricated.
If the fan does not blow air out of the hole, the fan may be the wrong way round, or
you may have the batteries the wrong way round.
If there are no bubbles, check that there is enough bubble mixture in the tray.
G. HOW IT WORKS
The motor operates both the gear box and the fan. The gear box slows the speed of
the motor and turns the cam on the side of the gear box. As the cam spins, it makes
the link arm go up and down, which makes the long arm rise and fall. The fan blows
air out of the pipe.
The arm dips the bubble wand into the mixture and then lifts it into the flow of air from
the pipe. The mixture forms a film across the ring-shaped wand, which becomes a
stream of bubbles as air flows through the ring.
H. FUN FACTS
• Bubbles are made of air trapped in a skin of bubble mixture, which is made from
water and detergent.
• The skin is created by a special property of water called surface tension. It pulls the
particles of water at the surface together.
• The detergent in the water lets the skin stretch to make bigger and stronger
bubbles.
• Bubbles are spheres (and not cubes or pyramids) because a sphere is the shape
with the smallest surface area compared to the space inside.
• Bubble magicians make all sorts of interesting shapes by joining bubbles together.
When two bubbles are joined together, you'll see a disc at the point where they
join.
• You can often see swirls of colour in bubbles. They are caused by light reflecting
from the skin of the bubbles.
• Foam is made up of millions of bubbles joined together.
• The world record for the most people standing in a single bubble is nineteen!
I. WHATʼS NEXT
Make your own bubble mixture when the included mixture is used up. Mix two cups
of water with a quarter of a cup of liquid soap and a teaspoon of sugar.
