Fluidized Bed Filter for aquaria up to 10,000 l (approx.2000 gal).
The Aqua Medic FB 5000 has been designed especially for aquaristic use and is recommended by professional
aquarists. The FB 5000 is a biological filter. The high flow rate and the fine sand ensures an optimum supply
with oxygen for all bacteria and a high biological capacity.

2. Set up and connections
The FB 5000 has to be set up in a way that the outlet water can flow downwards freely, e. g. into a filter sump.
If the water flow is stopped, the check valve prevents that sand enters the inlet pipe.
The water circulation can be made in different ways:
-
As bypass of a larger circulation pump (e. g. a pump from our NK or OK series). This set up is recommended.
-
With a separate circulation pump. In this case, we recommend Ocean Runner OR 3500.
If the water circulation is made with a bypass of a NK or similar pump, the FB 5000 can be filled with sand and
water before starting. Then the water circulation is started slowly and the sand starts to fluidize. Very fine
particles will be flushed out during the first minutes of operation. If the water circulation has been shut off for
some time and the sand does not start to fluidize by itself, increase the water flow until the sand starts moving.
Then adjust the flow rate until the sand is moving optimal (see photo page 1).
If the water circulation is done with an Ocean Runner OR 3500, the unit should be filled with water first. Then
switch the circulation on and fill in the sand from above (10 l). Very fine particles will be flushed out during the
first minutes of operation. The height of the fluidized sand should be similar to the photo on page 1.
If the circulation has been shut off for some time, it may happen that the OR 3500 is not powerful enough to
fluidize the sand again. In this case, connect a hose to the tap water to the bottom drain and give a short shot
of water pressure. This will fluidize the sand and the operation will start again. A shut off of the circulation for a
few minutes is no problem. The pump will manage to fluidize the sand by itself. To clean the unit, water and
sand can be drained through the bottom drain.
