ISDN BRI WAN Interface Card Independent of Host
ISDN BRI WAN Interface Card Independent of Host
The one-port ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) Wide Area Network (WAN) Interface Card is an interface
card assembly for use within a range of data communication (gateway and router) chassis supplied by
Cisco Systems. Two versions of the card are available, one with a built-in Network Termination 1 (NT1)
device and one without.
The BRI WAN interface card mounts in a slot, labeled W0 or W1, which is one of the two slots available
in a Cisco 1700 Series router. The BRI WAN interface card provides all of the hardware necessary to
allow connection of the Cisco 1700 series chassis to one Basic Access Integrated Services Digital
Network (ISDN) at the S-reference point. The ISDN usage is restricted to point-to-point mode only.
The BRI WAN interface card supports S-bus sharing; therefore, it does not require a dedicated S-bus
connection for each ISDN port.
The ISDN connection must be made to a network connection point that is provided by one network
vendor or public telecom operator (PTO) to ensure that common network timing exists between the
ISDN ports used. Failure to observe this point may result in lost (nonrecoverable) data packets because
of timing slips.
The BRI WAN interface card mounted in one of the 2 WAN card slots is fully transportable between
compatible host chassis. The choice of each compatible chassis has no impact on the capabilities,
functionality, or performance of the BRI WAN interface card.
The BRI WAN interface card provides users of compatible host router or bridge chassis with a
high-speed throughput, point-to-point connection that can be set up over the digital telecommunication
network ISDN.

Electro-Magnetic Compatibility Compliance

The product conforms to the requirements of Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive
2004/108/EC by complying with the requirements set forth in EN55022 and EN50082-1.
This product range falls within the scope of the Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (TTE)
Regulations 1992 (Statutory Instrument No. 2423/1992).
However, there is currently no common technical regulation (CTR) in force that covers this particular
category of equipment. Therefore, the TTE regulations do not apply as specified in clauses 2(1), 4(3),
and 6(1).
Accordingly, this product range conforms to the requirements of the national standards for connection
to the network in accordance with section 22 of the 1984 Telecommunications act.
The installation and maintenance procedures in the installation and configuration guide must be
followed to ensure compliance with these regulations.

Operating Conditions for Canada

In addition to the warnings and safety guidelines listed in the

The Canadian Department of Communications label identifies certified equipment. This certification
means that the equipment meets certain telecommunications network protective operational and safety
requirements. The Department does not guarantee the equipment will operate to the user's satisfaction.
