The operation principle of the water softening device:

Water softening devices thrive on a method of ion exchange. Hard water flows
through the ion exchange
exchange. The resin charge of the ion-exchange of the device changes the Ca++
and Mg++ ions into Na+ ions which do not get separated even at higher water
temperature.
After producing a certain quantity of soft water, the charge gets
discharged so it needs regenerating. Regenerating is done automatically by using a
very clean NaCl solution. While being regenerated, the Na+ ions get into the resin
again from the brine. The device is completely automatic, it completes all the
process of cleaning and regenerating. As to the staff handling the device, all they
need to do is supervise it periodically. The device also needs regular salt supplying.
You can fill salt into the device enough for several regenerating as the device uses
up only as much as it needs for regenerating the resin. Manual dosage of the
regenerating salt is not necessary, all you need to do is check its quantity and refill it
if necessary. One of the features of the excellent quality resin used for softening is
that the sizes of the granules are nearly the same. This allows lesser consumption of
salt, so the costs of operation get lower.
The control valve regenerates the softening resin during water break at night, which
is necessary as during the regeneration the device does not change the hardness of
the incoming water, so it would not get softened.
The water softening resin makes water of 0,1 German hardness. To get drinking
water of 5 German hardness, which is the minimal authorized limit, after softening
the water it needs to be hardened artificially. The mixing valve has been put into the
control valve of the device, so the water coming out of the softener has got the
adjusted hardness.

Description of the chemical operation of the water softening device:

The chemical operation of the device thrives on the ion-exchanging properties of the
charged ion-exchanging resin. These properties come from the active groups that
have free valence and are planted into the neutral polystyrene substrate. These
compounds have relatively small affinity to natrium and relatively big affinity to
calcium and magnesium. While the device is working, the ion-changing resin
charged with natrium keeps changing the calcium and magnesium ions of the water
into natrium ions. This process is the water-softening which lasts as long as there is
natrium on the active groups of the resin.
