Conditions for King and rook Castling:
A. King and Rook have never been moved.
B. There are no other pieces between the King and Rook.
C. The square which the King and Rook reach and pass over is not
presently under attack from an opponent piece.
D. The opponent has not called "CHECK" yet.
Basic rules for the Queen
The Queen is the most powerful piece on the board.
• The Queen may move in any straight line, horizontally, vertically or
diagonally and is not limited in the number of squares moved per play
until she encounter a fellow chessman.
• The Queen cannot jump over fellow chessmen and cannot change
directions while moving.
Basic rules for the rook
The Rook is next in power to the Queen.
• He moves and captures in a straight line (forwards, backwards, and
sideways) but lacks the power of moving or capturing diagonally.
• Like the Queen, the Rook cannot displace or leap over any piece to move
or capture a piece on a square.
• The Rook can be used to protect the King by means of castling.
Basic rules for the Bishop
• The Bishop moves and captures diagonally forwards or backwards to the
extent of the board, but he cannot do so vertically or horizontally like the
Rook.
• His diagonal movement means that he is confined to travelling on
squares of the same colour throughout the game (he will never have any
contact with a Bishop of the opposite colour).
Basic rules for the Knight
The Knights' move is in an "L" formation.
• First, 2 steps in a vertical or horizontal direction and
then, 1 step in the opposite direction to the first.
• The Knight is the only piece that can jump over
friendly and hostile pieces on the board to complete
his move and/or capture and opponents man.
• At the start of the game, the Knight is the only piece
placed on the first rank which can be played before
the Pawns are moved, (see Fig 2).
