System/Supervisor/Module Problems and Steps to Resolve Them
System, supervisor, and module problems occur when either system status LEDs indicate a problem, the
supervisor or modules are not recognized or show faulty, or when users are experiencing poor performance.
The following commands are supported by the Output Interpreter and can be used to assist in troubleshooting
system, supervisor, and module problems: show version, show module, or show system.
If you have the output of the supported commands from your Cisco device, you can use the Output Interpreter
(registered customers only) in order to display potential issues and fixes. In order to use Output Interpreter
(registered customers only) , you must be a registered user, be logged in, and have JavaScript enabled.
Having problems upgrading software
Complete these steps:
1.
Most customer problems that have to do with software upgrades are the result of not understanding
the copy tftp procedure, the boot process, or the Flash system for the supervisor.
Refer to Working with System Software Images for more information, specifically, on the copy tftp
procedure for your supervisor.
Refer to Using the Flash File System for more information on the Flash file system for your
supervisor.
Refer to Recovering Catalyst Switches Running CatOS from Booting Failures for more information
on rommon recovery information.
Capture the show version, show flash, or dir bootflash command output, which depends on the type
of supervisor you have. Verify that you have enough DRAM and Flash for the image to which you
attempt to upgrade, and then perform the copy tftp procedure.
2.
Set the boot environment variable and the config−register. Refer to Modifying the Switch Boot
Configuration for more information on these settings.

Cisco recommends that you set the boot environment variable and config−register in this way:
a.
Verify the image that you want to boot, currently installed in Flash. Issue the dir bootflash:
command.
b.
Set the boot environment variable for the image in Flash from which you want to boot.
