What is the 2009 Digital Conversion?
Are your customers ready for the DTV Transition?
On February 17th 2009, full-power analog broadcasting will end and television stations will begin
broadcasting only digital signals. As a result, while televisions with a digital tuner should continue to
receive over-the-air broadcasts, analog-only televisions may lose signals. Be aware that while analog sets
connected to old converter boxes, antenna or "rabbit ears" will display digital broadcasts, they may not
receive full digital quality.
Digital broadcasts will require a TV with a digital tuner or a set top box. The government is issuing $40
coupons (up to two per household) to help offset the cost of the box. This conversion only affects people
who are currently using an antenna to receive their over-the-air broadcasting. Analog only TVs should
continue to work as before, through cable and satellite services.
Digital broadcasts will provide superior sound and video quality even for older TVs. To receive HD broadcasts
over the air (with an antenna), the TV must have a built in ATSC tuner, which is available on many new
HDTVs available today.
For additional information on the DTV transition, please call the Federal Communications Commission at
1-888-225-5322 (TTY: 1-888-835-5322) or visit the Commissions digital television web site at www.
DTV.gov or call the NTIA at 1-888-DTV-2009. Check back often for updates and new information.
