In

e years
over
which
you

bear
ing loss
has
been
increasing, you
hav

gradually
losing the

recognize and

speech of
normal
intensity.

uire this faculty
at once. The
ears
must
first learn
throug
h
practice
to
separate
the

ired

undesired and
to interpret

hear.
You must
learn
again
to di
srega
rd
ex traneous sou
nd

and concentrate on
what
you wish
to h
ear,
just
as
a
per
son
with
normal

earing does.
A new
employee in
a
no
isy
machine
shop
,
for
example, find

it difficult to
understand
any
thing that
is be ing
said
around
him. But he is amazed to
observe
the
other
work er
s talking
among themselves
apparently
as
natu
rall
y as
they would
in
the
quiet of
their own
homes.
After
a
period of
time,
however,
he too
can
easily
hear
an
d
understand
his
co- workers.
He
has
become
so
accus
tomed to th
e noise tha
t he h
as
learned
automatically
to
eliminate
it
from
hi
s consciousness,
just
as you
now
have
to
learn
to
automatically
disrega
rd
ex
traneous
noises
and
