Powered   w heelchair's   m ay   b e   s uscep2ble   t o   e lectromagne2c  
interference   ( EMI),   w hich   i s   i nterfering   e lectromagne2c   e nergy   ( EM)  
emiXed   f rom   s ources   s uch   a s   r adio   s ta2ons,   T V   s ta2ons,   a mateur  
radio   ( HAM)   t ransmiXers,   t wo-­‐way   r adios,   a nd   c ellular   p hones.   T he  
interference   ( from   r adio   w ave   s ources)   c an   c ause   t he   p ower  
wheelchair   t o   r elease   i ts   b rakes,   m ove   b y   i tself,   o r   m ove   i n  
unintended   d irec2ons.   I t   c an   a lso   p ermanently   d amage   t he   p ower  
wheelchair's   c ontrol   s ystem.   T he   i ntensity   o f   t he   i nterfering   E M  
energy   c an   b e   m easured   i n   v olts   p er   m eter   ( V/m).   E ach   p ower  
wheelchair   c an   r esist   E MI   u p   t o   a   c ertain   i ntensity;   t his   i s   c alled   i ts  
"immunity   l evel".   T he   h igher   t he   i mmunity   l evel,   t he   g reater   t he  
protec2on.   A t   t his   2 me,   c urrent   t echnology   i s   c apable   o f   a chieving   a t  
least   a   2 0   V /m   i mmunity   l evel,   w hich   w ould   p rovide   u seful   p rotec2on  
from   t he   m ore   c ommon   s ources   o f   r adiated   E MI.   T his   p ower  
wheelchair   P W-­‐999UL   h as   b een   s hipped   w ith   n o   f urther   m odifica2on  
and   w ith   a n   i mmunity   l evel   o f   2 0   V /m   w ithout   a ny   a ccessories.  
 
There   a re   a   n umber   o f   s ources   o f   r ela2vely   i ntense   e lectromagne2c  
fields   i n   t he   e veryday   e nvironment.   S ome   o f   t hese   s ources   a re  
obvious   a nd   e asy   t o   a void.   O thers   a re   n ot   a pparent   a nd   e xposure   i s  
unavoidable.   H owever,   w e   b elieve   t hat   b y   f ollowing   t he   w arning   l isted  
below,   y our   r isk   t o   E MI   w ill   b e   m inimized.
