2) Fit the inlet and monitoring head. The inlet
comprises a 65 x 65mm round-to-square socket
that houses the PM
impactor, a plastic funnel

and an aluminium threaded top (see photo top
right). The monitoring head comprises a threaded
aluminium rod fitted to a round PVC boss (see
photo bottom right). Fit the inlet to the top of the
post (the square socket will slide onto the post)
and then screw the monitoring head onto the top
of the inlet. At this point, using a permanent
marker or correction fluid, mark both the inlet
socket and the post beneath it on the same side.
The inlet has to be removed later to install the
PM
sampler and lining up the two marks each

time will ensure the head is correctly aligned
every time it is removed.
3) Fit the alignment peg. (See photo bottom
right) Using a compass or GPS locate north at the
monitoring location. The alignment peg must now
be fitted to the monitoring head pointing north.
Carefully drill a 6mm diameter hole 10-15mm
deep into the bottom of the round-section of the
monitoring head (see photo right). Place a small
amount of solvent-cement or superglue on one
end of the plastic dowel and insert it into the
drilled hole, at least 5mm should be exposed. It is
essential that the alignment peg points to
magnetic north. This ensures that the mounting
cylinder will be aligned to north when it is subse-
quently installed.
4) Install the mounting cylinder. The mounting
cylinders can be found inside the carrying flasks,
they are pre-loaded with sticky pad dust collection
slides. Remove a cylinder from a flask and with
the orientation notch facing down, slide it over the
monitoring head. Rotate the cylinder until the
notch locates over the north alignment peg.
Do not remove the sticky pad backing paper until
the DS500X sampler unit has been installed.
