1. Adjust the polarizer in accordance with the following procedure.

a) Engage the transmitted light DIC slider in the light path and tighten the clamping knob.

b) Engage the U-ANT or U-AN analyzer in the light path.

2. Select the BF brightfield observation light path (with no optical element engaged).

3. Engage the U-FW32PO polarizer on the U-FWT filter wheel into the light path.

Operation using U-DICT and U-ANT

a) Rotate the prism control knob of the transmitted light DIC slider clockwise as far as it will go.

b) Engage the 10X objective in the light path, bring the specimen into approximate focus, and remove the eye-

piece. You can see the pupil of the objective if you look into the inside of the eyepiece sleeve. (You can see the

pupil more easily if you use the U-CT30 centering telescope.)

c) As you loosen the clamping screw of the U-FWT filter wheel

and rotate the U-FWT while looking at the objective pupil, a

black fringe may appear at a certain position. The polarizer

should be used at the position where the fringe appears dark-

est. (Fig. 3)

d) Once the position of the polarizer is determined, tighten the

clamping knob of the U-FWT.

e) Replace the eyepiece to the original position.
