Ensuring functional safety
4.1 General information
Functional safety without motor protection evaluation
The motor with functionally safe rotary encoder is equipped with thermal motor protection,
which must be evaluated.
Use the geared motor with motor protection evaluation.
Resonance effects in operation
Resonance effects can occur on the geared motor as a result of the converter or comparable
power controlling devices.
Resonance effects must be excluded.
Optimize, for example, the controller parameters by appropriately filtering the current setpoint.
For the geared motor with the rotary encoder, Siemens assumes responsibility that the
directives of functional safety are complied with. The safety-relevant connection elements
are sealed before delivery.
Also take into account the applicable national and regional legislation, standards and
regulations.
If a geared motor with rotary encoder is used for safety-relevant applications together with
a brake, then the lower maximum permissible air gaps for the brake apply than for standard
applications, for more information refer to Chapter Technical specifications of the brake for
encoders for functional safety (Page 38).
To ensure that the geared motor is not damaged:
• Do not step on the geared motor.
• Do not place any objects on the geared motor.
• Do not place the geared motor down on the fan cover.
Working on the rotary encoder and the brake
All safety-related mechanical connections for the encoder or the brake are marked with a seal
(enamel dot).
Only Siemens service personnel or personnel trained and authorized by Siemens may carry
out the work.
