Grease abrasive surface and slide it repeatedly until grease is
spread.
In case you do not feel any chatter as you swing
dovetail in position "A" and "B" in conjunction with block after
greasing them, dovetail is lapped correctly.
If not, scrape dovetail again for re-lapping.

Assemble rack and pinion.

Defective Rack and Pinion of Focusing Mechanism
Teeth of rack

focusing knobs
Disengage block and dovetail.
Disengage rack and dovetail.
Unscrew left focusing knob, and pull out pinion from metal part ..
Disengage right focusing knob and
pinion.
a.
Rotate nut counter-clockwise
with pin-face screwdriver.
b.
Pull out pinion from focusing
knob.
Pinion should be driven out
by hitting it with hammer,
at
which it is necessary to apply
a wooden stick between hammer
and pinion as shown in figure.

Insert replacement pinion into right focusing knob.
Knobs and pinions are available in two types ---new and old---
each of which has its own mounting manner.

New type knob has a parallel
hole in its center and right
stem of pinion is equally
paralleled.
Apply a small amount of in-
stantaneous adhesive to.
parallel hole of knob into
which, pinion is inserted
until it stops, then clamp with nut.
