Operating Instructions
WARNING:
HAZARDOUS VOLTAGE
CAN CAUSE ELECTRICAL SHOCK
DISCONNECT POWER BEFORE PROCEEDING
WITH ANY WORK ON THIS EQUIPMENT.
Limited protection against electric shock
Degree of protection IP00 according to IEC 60529
Safe-to-touch according to DIN VDE 0106, Part 100
Only suitably qualified personnel may perform commissioning and
maintenance.
Follow the Operating Instructions!
Mounting
For dimension drawings see Fig. I (Dimensions in mm).
Minimum clearance to earthed parts.
Screw-fastening on level vertical surface with 4 M10 screws, maximum tighte-
ning torque 23 Nm. Fasten screws with plain washers (diameter 25 mm, thick-
ness 4 mm) and spring washers provided. Use M8 screws (25 Nm max.) for
the additional plate on 3TF69..-.C../3TF69..-.C.. for facilitating installation.
During installation, cover off the contactors if foreign bodies (e.g. drilling
swarf) might fall onto them. In the event of contamination danger, heavy dust
or an aggressive atmosphere install the contactors in housings. For permis-
sible mounting positions see Fig. II.
To meet the conditions for positively-driven operation between main contacts
and the NC elements of the auxiliary contacts, 1 NC element of the right-hand
and left-hand auxiliary contact block must be connected in series.
Connection
Terminal screws are supplied loose.
For connection see Fig. III.
Permissible cross-sections for main conductors:
1 or 2 conductors connectable
Finely stranded with cable lug
Stranded with cable lug
Connection bars
AWG leads,
solid and stranded
Terminal screws
Tightening torque
Permissible cross-sections for auxiliary conductors:
Solid and stranded
Finely stranded with core end
Pin cable lug to DIN 46231
Push-on tab B2,8
AWG leads,
solid and stranded
Insulation stripping length
Tightening torque
Use 75° copper wire only.
For circuit diagram and position of terminals see Fig. IV.
For circuit diagram (NEMA) see Fig. A.
Operation
Note the control voltage (see printed coil plate).
The switching state of the contactor is shown by the indicator, see Fig. V. For
3TF68..-.C.. only: The operating time of the contactor of 70 to 120 ms can be
reduced to 22 to 65 ms by cutting through the yellow wire jumper, see
Fig. VI. Reversing operation is then no longer permissible.
After a short-circuit in the system, the switching state is not clearly shown by
the indicator. In this event, ensure that the main circuit is isolated. Then per-
form several off-load switching operations on the contactor. If the interrupter
fusion does not come apart, the interrupters must be renewed.
For an overvoltage test, the protective-circuit leads must be disconnected,
see Fig. VIIa, as otherwise the integrated overvoltage limiter is destroyed.

If the load side is changed, the protective-circuit wire connections at the ter-
minal screws must be changed over, see Fig. VIIa to c. For this, the middle
interrupter must be removed, see Fig. XIa to d. If the contactor is used in
combination with frequency converters, the protective circuit must be discon-
nected.
Motor protection provided by overload relay 3UA6/3UB1 (see Operating Ins-
tructions for overload relay).
With contactors for momentary-contact control, use relays without reclosing
lockout; with contactors for maintained-contact control, use relays with reclo-
sing lockout.
Maintainance
The following are replaceable: Casing upper section with operating mecha-
nism, vacuum interrupters, magnet coil, auxiliary contact blocks.
For order numbers, see Catalog.
In order to assure operating reliability of the contactors, only original spare
parts may be used!
Hazardous voltage
Before starting work, isolate the device!
Cleaning
Remove dust deposits (with a vacuum cleaner).
Renewing the auxiliary contact blocks
If necessary, the complete auxiliary contact block can be replaced (two
auxiliary contacts each with 2NO+2NC); see Fig. VIII.
For renewing the casing upper section, see Fig. IX.
For checking the vacuum interrupter erosion indication, see Fig. X.
The erosion on the vacuum interrupters can be checked in the closed state by
means of 3 white double slides below the connections on the load side. If the
clearance on one double slide in the closed state is less than 0.5 mm, the
interrupter must be renewed. To ensure good operating reliability, it is
advisable to renew all interrupters together.
Renewing the vacuum interrupters:
Remove and install the vacuum interrupters individually, i.e. one after the
other! For removing, see Fig. XIa to e and installation.
For renewing the magnet coil, see Fig. XIIa to i
The coil and closing electronics must be replaced together. Ensure that the
magnet pole faces are clean; do not use any grease solvents for cleaning, do
3TF69
not apply oil and do not scratch them with sharp objects.
