BlackBerry
Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP6 supports remote message searches on
BlackBerry devices that are running BlackBerry
search for email messages that are located on the organization's messaging server from their
BlackBerry devices. By default, this feature is turned on. You can turn off this feature using the
BlackBerry Manager.
This document outlines the expected impact of supporting remote message searches on the
BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Test conditions
The server hosting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server used the following hardware and operating
system:
2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel
2 logical processors
4 GB of memory
2 x 33.9 GB SAS drives, RAID 1
Windows Server
The tests were performed with 2000 users. Each user performed one remote message search
each day. The tests were conducted under certain lab conditions; the results experienced in your
organization's environment might be different.
Results
Impact on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server
The Average %Processor Time on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server was approximately 16%.
Impact on the Microsoft Exchange server
The test results indicate that the impact of users performing remote message searches from their
BlackBerry devices is similar to the impact of users performing remote message searches from

. If you did not turn on full-text indexing on your organization's Microsoft
Exchange server, remote message searches for text within the bodies of messages can result in
a significant number of read operations on the hard disk, which impacts performance.
The impact on the Microsoft Exchange server depends on various factors in your organization's
environment, including the average size of user mailboxes, and the number of messages and
total disk storage for each user mailbox.
