Heavy-Duty Hose Reels
IMPORTANT: Prior to performing any
maintenance procedure, the following safety
precautions must be observed. Personal
injury may occur.
WARNING
Release all pressure within the system
prior to performing any overhaul procedure.
• Disconnect the air supply line to the pump's
motor.
• Into an appropriate container, operate the
control valve to discharge remaining pressure
within the system.
• Disconnect the material connecting hose.
Never point a control valve at any portion of your
body or another person. Accidental discharge of
pressure and/or material can result in injury.
Read each step of the instructions carefully. Make
sure a proper understanding is achieved before
proceeding.

Remove and Replace

NOTE : These procedures address the most
common repair made to the reel. Refer to
Figure 2 for component identification on the
following procedures.
For Overhaul procedures, refer to the section entitled
Overhaul .
Spring Arbor and Power Spring
Should the reel fail to retract, either the Power Spring
and/or Arbor are broken or have been installed incorrectly.
1. Close the shut-off valve to stop the supply of oil to the
reel, if applicable.
2. Operate the control valve into a collection container to
release any pressure within the system.
3. Disconnect the material hose from the reel.
• Cap each connection to prevent spillage of oil.
4. Remove the hardware that secures then reel to its
mount.
5. Position the assembly on its reel (base assembly
upward) on a suitable work surface.

IMPORTANT: Make sure there is no tension
on Power Spring ( 41 ).
6. Rotate the Base, Guide and Roller assembly in both
directions to ensure the reel assembly is not operating
properly.
7. Remove Union Adapter ( A ) from Main Shaft ( 24 ) if
used.
• Cap the Main Shaft as required.
8. Loosen Setscrew ( 31 ) that secures the Main Shaft to
Base Assembly ( 26 ).
• Mark the Main Shaft to indicate the flat to ensure the
Setscrew seats properly upon reassembly.
See Figure 2 .
9. Remove the Base Assembly [with Guide and Roller
Assembly ( 29 )] from Spring Case and Ratchet
Assembly ( 39 ).
10. Remove Snap Ring ( 25 ) that secures Main Shaft ( 24 )
to the Spring Case and Ratchet Assembly.
• Use care not to mar the surface of the Main Shaft.

11. Remove Jam Nut ( 38 ) that secures Stud ( 40 ) to the
Spring Case and Ratchet Assembly.
WARNING
Power Spring can uncoil during separation
of Spring Case and Ratchet Assembly from
Sheave Assembly. Personal injury can occur.
Alemite Corporation recommends to secure the
Power Spring with two (2) cable ties or two steel
hose clamps prior to removal.
Should the Power Spring require disposal, secure
with two (2) steel hose clamps.
IMPORTANT: Separate the Spring Case and
Ratchet Assembly from Sheave Assembly
( 19 ) with care. Check to ensure the Power
Spring remains coiled during this process
12. Remove Locknuts ( 33 ) that secure the Spring Case and
Ratchet Assembly to the Sheave Assembly.
13. Separate the Spring Case and Ratchet Assembly from
the Power Spring and Sheave Assembly.
• Use a wide blade or other suitable tool.
