INSTALLING AND USING YOUR PPS-4 PROGRAMMABLE 1 OR 2 SOURCE, 4
STEREO SPEAKER PAIR SWITCH-AUTOMATIC LOAD PROTECTION
Your PPS-4 Speaker Selector is designed to operate with up to 4 pairs of loudspeakers of 4, 8, and 16
Ohm impedance in any combination. While primarily intended for use with 8 and 16 Ohm speakers, a 4
Ohm switch is provided to insert a small amount of extra resistance in the protection circuit when used
with 4 Ohm units.
The PPS-4 can be used with one or two stereo amplifiers, or with 4 channels of a surround-sound type
sound system. Each of the 4 output control channels can be individually switched to the amplifier
connected to the A AMPLIFIER INPUT, or one connected to the B INPUT (if any). Thus it is convenient
to listen to different program material in different rooms, swap front and rear channels in a surround-sound
system, etc.
Both amplifier impedance load protection circuit uses a progressive system, and are fully automatic
when used with 8 and 16 Ohm speakers. Progressive protection is used, no more resistance is added to the
circuit than is needed to keep the load appearing on the amplifier at 4 Ohms or higher regardless of how
many speakers are switched "ON" at one time. This insures minimum power loss for all operating
conditions.
Impedance protection circuits for both A and B amplifier inputs are identical, and completely
independent of each other. Speakers selected for operation with the A amplifier input will have impedance
protection inserted as needed only for those in operation with that amplifier, and will have no effect on any
speaker pairs that may be operating with the B amplifier. The same holds true for those speakers operating
on the B channel, the number of speaker pairs in use with the B amplifier will have no ef fect on those in
use with the A channel.
Other PPS-4 features include power handling capability of up to 72 Watts RMS continuous (216 Watts
audio) at 8 Ohms in any switching mode. The LEFT and RIGHT channels are completely separate to
assure safe operation with all types of amplifiers, including those with "bridging" outputs.
Connections to amplifiers and speakers are illustrated in the back of these instructions. Remember that
the LEFT and RIGHT circuits are separate, so connections must be made correctly or the system will not
operate properly.
Heavy duty push-to-open connectors are provided on the PPS-4 rear panel to insure positive, long
lasting connections. These connectors can be used with wire up to 3/16" diameter . To make connection,
strip about 3/8" of insulation from the wire end. Push the connector tab toward the PPS-4 rear panel to
open the hole. Insert the stripped wire end into the opening, and release the tab. Make sure no loose ends
stick out to cause problems. Check that the bare wire is connected to the hole, not the insulation.
If only one amplifier is to be used, connect it to the AMPLIFIER "A" terminals as shown. Make sure
the + and -, and L and R channel connections are correct to avoid unsatisfactory operation or dead
channels.
The same precautions should be used when connecting the speakers, crossed channels, polarity , or
grounds will result in improper operation.
Rubber feet provide a non-marring, stable mount for the PPS-4. They are high enough to help promote
air circulation under the unit, keeping it cool. A good precaution is to install in a manner that allows free
air circulation around the unit. Avoid placing the PPS-4 on any surface that is easily damaged by heat, the
switchbox can become quite warm if operating with all speakers "ON" at high power.
