In 2005 Kushiro City Medical Association Hospital (Japan)
expanded its facilities.This provided the right opportunity for
them to upgrade their network, which had not been
performing as required. Allied Telesis was chosen for their

Customer Profile
Kushiro City Medical Association Hospital opened its doors in
1985. Since this time the hospital has contributed to community
health, by providing both emergency medical care, and an open
medical agency offering diagnosis and the use of medical facilities
for patients introduced by family doctors. Staffed by medical
specialists, surgeons, doctors, junior nurses and associated
professionals, the hospital offers a comprehensive range of
hospital and medical services to patients, as well as emergency
medical care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
In 2005 Kushiro Hospital modernized, remodelled and expanded
its facilities, which provided the perfect opportunity to redesign
the network infrastructure. In addition to hospital and medical
services, Kushiro Hospital also provides a collaborative network
between itself and other hospitals and clinics. As such, a robust,
reliable, and scalable network solution was required.
Kushiro is known as "the town of mist". It is situated on the South
Eastern coast of Hokkaido (Japan), facing the Pacific Ocean.
Kushiro is the seat of the Kushiro branch of the Hokkaido
prefectural government, as well as being the political, economic
and cultural centre of East Hokkaido.

Customer Requirements
The environment surrounding medical care and technology
has evolved rapidly over the past years. In order to keep at
the forefront of this changing environment, Kushiro City
Medical Association Hospital had to put in place a
comprehensive network upgrade plan.
The hospital's original network ran at 10Mbs, and included
hubs, meeting the initial requirements for simple data
transfer. It was primarily used for accounting and the
exchange of medical test information.Traffic was initially low,
but vastly increased as the number of PCs and thus the
demand for email and internet capabilities grew.The
hospital's association with other establishments such as a
junior nurses' school and a clinical laboratory centre further
stretched the LAN's capabilities, causing performance issues.
With 195 staff and 126 beds for patients, the number of
people needing to exchange information had increased
beyond what the hospital's network was capable of
supporting in terms of bandwidth, and the system had
become unreliable (one fault could take out the whole
network).The LAN was severely limiting the hospital's
efficiency and thus impeding its ability to remain at the
forefront.
In addition to an increase in traffic, when Kushiro Hospital
expanded its facilities, the number of services it provided
also markedly increased. New technological capabilities such
as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) became available, and
existing services such as diagnosis collaboration were
promoted.These expansions meant that the network
capabilities required by the hospital went well beyond
increased bandwidth - the hospital now required a highly
reliable, resilient and scalable network infrastructure that
would enable them to add future capabilities as and when
they were required.
To achieve their objectives, Kushiro Hospital turned to Allied
Telesis, on the basis of their proven history of delivering
