5 Switching Operations - Summary

Please reference the steps below to perform typical switching operations. The Switch Controller
can be configured to operate in Remote (Auto switch) mode or Local (Manual switch) mode.
1. Auto Switch Operation: When the Controller front panel switch is set to Remote (Auto
Mode) – it will monitor the on-air TX output power and if this drops below a minimum
output power threshold (amp_fwd_min), the Switch Controller will automatically switch
over to put the standby TX on-air (TX On) and the on-air TX into the load (TX Off) . To
enable AUTO switching, the Switch Controller and both PAs all need to be configured for
Remote (Auto) mode. In Auto mode, the Switcher will always command one TX on into
the antenna and the other TX off into the load.
Auto Switch Action:
a. With TXA switched on and into the antenna and TXB switched off and into the
load, the Switch Controller will switch from TXA to TXB if TXA output power
drops below the minimum threshold (amp_fwd_min) – making TXA INVALID.
The Switch Controller monitors the output power of TXA, and if the output
power remains lower than the minimum threshold for roughly 30 seconds, then
the PA status will change to INVALID. The Auto switching process involves ...
i. Switch Controller mutes both TXA and TXB (turns both PAs OFF –
ii. Switch Controller switches coax relay so TXB is into the antenna and
iii. Switch Controller then unmutes TXB (turns PA B On) while maintaining
iv. TXB ramps up from 0W to the rated output power, as may be monitored
v. LPTV_USED changes from CHANGE_TO_B to LPTV_B).
b. Settings:
i. Switch Controller set to Remote mode (front panel switch).
ii. Both PAs RF-CTRL-MODE set to Remote mode (disables PA front
iii. Both PAs output power is greater than min threshold (amp_fwd_min) –

TXA is into the load. This changes the status of the TX connected to the
antenna as monitored by LPTV_USED (it will change from LPTV_A to
CHANGE_TO_B).
TXA off (leaves PA A off) – so LPTV_A_RF = Off and LPTV_B_RF =

i.e. both PAs are VALID.
