Instructions for use
Prior to initial operation, please read these instructions carefully.
Excessive sunlight, fish excretions, food leftovers, and dead plant parts in the garden
pond lead to an increased growth of algae and microorganisms clouding the water.
Mechanical and biological filters are usually overtaxed by the number of unwanted
particles.
When using a filter, the HOBBY UV-C-Deluxe will clean your water within a fortnight.
In case of excessive stocking or ponds not designed true to nature, additional filters or
a larger HOBBY UV-C-Deluxe model may be necessary.
Using a pump, the pond water is pumped through the HOBBY UV-C-Deluxe, thus
being exposed to the UV-C rays. The rays damage the DNA of the algae, bacteria, and
germs and renders them harmless. The length of the radiation and the total wattage
of the UV clarifier are of minor important. The crucial factor here is the intensity of
the radiation in the UV-C range.
The Philips TUV PL-S lamps in the HOBBY UV-C-Deluxe are also used for industrial dis-
infection and the treatment of drinking water and ensure a radiation of a lethal wave-
length for bacteria. Thanks to the protective coating of the TUV glass, the intensity
of the UV radiation barely deteriorates during the entire lamp life. Even after 5,000
working hours, its performance will still be around 85%. The special high-grade steel
construction of the HOBBY UV-C-Deluxe increases its efficiency through reflection by
a further 35%. Excessive doses of UV rays are not possible. In order to maintain its
reflectivity, the insides should be cleaned with a brush several times a year.
The HOBBY UV-C-Deluxe has been designed such that a thin layer of water is formed
between the plastic housing and the inner part. This layer is necessary in order to
prevent the housing or the inner part from bending out of shape.
In the frost-free season, the HOBBY UV-C-Deluxe should be switched on 24 hours a
day. Frequent switching on and off reduces the lamp life. However, when cleaning, the
device must be switched off as otherwise the lamp could overheat and become useless
without the cooling effect of the circulatory water.
There is no need to fear that the use of a UV clarifier turns your fish "delicate". On
the contrary, fish in low-germ waters are clearly more energetic and resistant to
infections. Also, there is no need to fear that too many of the useful bacteria are
destroyed. UV clarifiers solely destroy free-floating bacteria, not bacteria in the pond
bed or the filter.
When using new pond filters, the UV clarifier should not be switched on for 3 weeks
to ensure that there are sufficient bacteria in the filter. As an alternative, you could
use starter bacteria such as HOBBY Nitrite Killer. The pond filter should be cleaned
with pond water. Do not use tap water as it contains chloride which can damage the
bacterial culture.
Installation
1. Saw off the transparent tube connections (B) to fit the size of the tube used.
Hand-tighten the tube connections (B) with fitted rubber gaskets (C) on the
housing (D).
2. Unscrew the lid (E) on the housing and insert the lamp (F) into the lamp socket (G).
3. Replace and hand-tighten the lid (E) on the housing (D) and fit the tubes to the
tube connections (B), using hose clamps (not supplied), if necessary.
4. Using two screws (not supplied), secure the supports (A) in the required position
such that the housing can be inserted vertically or horizontally.
5. Carefully press the housing (D) into the supports (A) and close the retaining clips.
6. Start the pump or the pond filter and check that the UV clarifier is watertight.
7. In case of well-used filters, switch the UV clarifier on immediately. When using
new filter material, wait for three weeks before switching it on. The transparent
tube connections (B) reveal whether or not the lamp (F) is on.
