5.4 Test Procedure – Pilling

Consult table 2 to determine which accessories should be used to conduct the Pilling test.

Pairs of samples are rubbed together for periods which again vary according to the test method being

used (see Swiss Standard SN 198525) for further details.

The three pairs of samples are used to provide examples of nil, slight and moderate levels of pilling

required in the assessment procedure described below.

When carrying out the test on the third pair it is important to stop the machine after every 500 cycles

and lightly brush away any loose fibres which may have gathered on the test surface.

The degree of Pilling should be assessed using the following 5 point scale.

Zero or only very slight pilling

Slight pilling

Moderate pilling

Severe pilling

Very severe pilling
