3. Display and Limit Setup
For selection of an engineering-unit digital range and resolution appropriate to the torque tool being
monitored, see the 3200/3300 Manual .
For Limit Mode selection and the setting of limit setpoint values, see the 3300 Manual .
4. Calibration and Operation
a. Connect the transducer to the TM3 via the four- or seven-wire cable. Turn ON the TM3 via the
power switch in the rear of the unit, and allow about ten minutes for warmup.
b. Depress and latch both "LIMIT SET" buttons on the TM3's front panel, to enable continuous "track-
ing" of the input torque signal.
c. Remove all load from the connected torque tool, and adjust the TM3's front-panel Coarse and Fine
"BALANCE" controls until a reading of zero is obtained.
d. For "TWO-POINT (DEADWEIGHT)" calibration, proceed to Step e, below. If deadweight calibra-
tion is inconvenient or impossible, you may employ a "SHUNT CALIBRATION" technique, using
the front-panel "CAL" button and "SPAN" controls. The TM3 is equipped with a precision 59-kΩ
resistor for this purpose. If necessary, this resistor may be replaced by one more appropriate for
the transducer and measurement range to be used. See the 3170 Manual for instructions on
resistor installation and on the SHUNT CALIBRATION procedure itself, including determination of
an Equivalent Input value for the calibration resistor.
e. Load the torque tool to an exactly known up-scale value between 50% and 80% of full scale.
Adjust the front-panel Coarse and Fine "SPAN" controls until a display reading equal to the "dead-
weight" value is obtained.
f.
Remove the "deadweight" load from the torque tool, and verify a good zero condition (see Step c,
above).
g. Depress the "CAL" button and note the displayed reading that results. This reading can now be
used in future "deadweight" calibrations. Thus, to calibrate the TM3 in the future, simply press the
"CAL" button and adjust the "SPAN" controls to obtain this reading.
h. Exit calibration mode by depressing and releasing both "LIMIT SET" buttons. THE TM3 IS NOW
CALIBRATED AND "ARMED" FOR AUTOMATIC CAPTURE OF SUCCESSIVE TORQUE PEAK
VALUES.
