STEP 10
NATURALIZE THE FILTER (optional)
• If desired, the Pond Waterfall Filter can be turned into a
beautiful, natural-looking waterfall using rocks or other
creative landscape materials.
• A well-designed waterfall often consists of two frame
rocks and a spillway rock which create a passage for
water flow (Ex. 16).
• Place two larger rocks or boulders on either side of the
intended water flow. Then, set one or more spillway rocks
between the frame rocks. Small rocks and gravel can then
be used to fill in gaps between the larger rocks.

General Maintenance

• The biological filtration process is nature's way of using bacteria to break down waste and pollutants into harmless
by-products which fertilize aquatic plants in the pond. Adding a successful biological filter media to the filter provides a
place for beneficial bacteria to colonize, helping to keep pond water clean and clear. It may take several weeks for the filter
to "mature" by containing enough bacteria to keep the pond healthy. The filter should be run 24 hours a day in order to
maintain its biological function.
• Depending on debris load, the filter mat will need to be rinsed periodically. Simply remove the filter mat and rinse it in a
bucket of pond water to avoid killing off beneficial bacteria with the chemicals often found in tap water such as chlorine. The
biological filter media (not included) can be cleaned once a year by rinsing in a bucket of pond water. It is not recommended
to clean biological filter media more than instructed in order to maintain sufficient bacteria levels.
• Winter care: If you live in a region where your pond is subject to freezing, it is recommended to shut down and disconnect
the pump running the filter, allowing the filter to drain to prevent freeze/thaw damage.
