MIC-D Software
I.ooo-P-olarized Light Kit
The
MI
C-D
Polarized
Light
Kit consists of
a
Polarizer and an Ana lyzer, which
a
re
identi cal to o
ne
a
nothe r.
To install the Polarizer, rem ove the screws to the left
a
nd
right of the Gliding
Stage.
Lift
the stage
from the MI
C-D fram e
and turn it
ove
r.
The Ana lyzer screws into the
raised
section on the und
erside
of the
Gliding Stage
that surrounds
the
circular
glass
window.
Repl ace
the
Gliding Stage a
nd
screws.
To
install
the
Polarizer,
simply
screw
it
into
the thr
ead s just be
neath the
front len s
of
the
Lamp Head.
With the
Polarizer an
d Ana lyzer
installed, tu
rn
o
n
the
MI
C-D a
nd
set
the
Ill
umination
Arm and
Lamp Head to the Tran smitted Light
position.
It is
recommen ded
that you
pull o
ut
the Light Diffuser to maximize light inten sity.
It
is
a
lso
best to
tu
rn
off
the
Auto -Exposu re setting in
the Live Image
Window and set
the Exposure and the Light
Inte nsity
manu ally
for
the next
step, and
to ac
hieve
the
best possible polarized light
image.
Rem ove
any
speci
me n
or
sample
from the
stage.
With
one
eye
on
the Live Image Window,
rotate the Gliding
Stage
until the
Live Image a
ppears
darkest. At
the
dar kest position
the
Live Image
sho uld
a
ppear
black. If the
Live
Image
does not
appear black, slowly
redu ce
the
Light Inten sity
Dial
until
it does. Now that
the
Polarizer a
nd Ana lyzer
a
re "crossed" , you
have
ac
hieved
"Extinction".
Place a
specimen
or
samp le that affects
po
larized
light
on
the
stage.
Granulated Sugar
is a re adily
available sample that will show up und
er
po
larized
light.
It is recom
mended that you place
polarized light speci
me ns
on a
microscope slide
so that
you
ca
n rotate them independently of
the
Gliding
Stage.
You
can
rotate
the
Gliding
Stage
slightly
away fro
m
Extinction to
"Partially
Cross"
the
Polarizer' and 'Analyzer
'.
This wil l

you to
better
see the e
ntire
speci
men
or sample
aga
inst
a
brighte r
bac
kground
.
