Sinewave Inverter, Battery Charger
General Description
The COMPACT is a sine wave inverter with an integral battery charger along with many
additional features. It has been developed to be used as a stand-alone AC source
(independent of a grid-system), or as a continuous / break-free source when attached to an
external AC supply (Grid or generator).
The COMPACT can be split into 3 (or 4 if solar regulator fitted) main components:-
1. The Inverter
The sinewave inverter built into the COMPACT generates a sinusoidal AC voltage with a very
precisely stabilised voltage and frequency. In order to start electric motors it has a short term
surge capability of three times the nominal output power. The inverter is protected against
overload, over temperature and short-circuits.
The inverter also has an adjustable 'Standby' mode to provide the smallest energy consumption
possible from the batteries. This feature detects whether a load is connected to the AC OUTPUT
and if not switches the AC OUTPUT to OFF. It briefly switches ON again approximately every
second to check whether the load is below the minimum value set by adjusting the 'Standby'
knob on the control panel. This load can be adjusted from 1 – 20 watts. The inverter will
automatically switch ON if it detects a load present at the AC OUTLET.
2. The Transfer System
The COMPACT can be connected to an AC source at the AC INPUT connector. (e.g. grid system
or generator). The transfer system monitors this voltage and if it is within pre-set limits
switches OFF the inverter and transfers it to the AC OUT connector. Depending on the power
rating of the AC source and the load on the AC OUT the Transfer System also uses available
power from the AC INPUT to charge the batteries.
3. The Battery Charger
A microprocessor controlled battery charger is built into the COMPACT. This charger employs a
3 – 4 stage charging profile to ensure full charge is returned to the batteries as quickly and
safely as possible. The desired charging current can be adjusted from 0 Amps to full power by
the 'Charger' knob on the control panel. Due to a closely regulated Float voltage the batteries
can remain continuously connected.
4. The Solar Charge Regulator (If fitted)
With the built-in solar charge regulator, the COMPACT is a complete solar power centre.
In a solar installation the batteries can be charged from this solar regulator and/or an
external AC source if available at the same time. This power sharing is controlled
automatically.
