Systems Management Use Cases

The following section describes how various system management tasks and

operations can be done in a VMware ESXi environment on PowerEdge

servers.

VMware Infrastructure Client has been enhanced to provide hardware health

monitoring functionality with ESXi release. Health status of various hardware

components are listed under Configuration→Health Status. VMware

Infrastructure Client provides the health statuses for various hardware

components in the server. The health status is either green (normal), yellow

(warning), or red (critical). For some components the relevant hardware

reading is reported. The following is a list of components reported by the VI

Client:

Individual Processor health status

•

Memory health status

Overall memory health status is reported. Health status at the

individual memory DIMM is not available in this release.

Storage components health status

–

Storage controller health information

–

Health status of storage controller battery

–

Health status of physical disks attached to the controller

–

Health status of RAID volumes (virtual disks) attached to the

controller

–

Health status of SAS PHY connections (or ports)

–

Health status of various sensors for each physical disk
