BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange
Technical Note: Impact of Supporting HTML and Rich-content Email Messages
Overview
®
BlackBerry
Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP6 supports users sending and receiving HTML and RTF
email messages using BlackBerry devices that are running BlackBerry
or later. By default, support for HTML and RTF email messages is turned on. You can turn off this
feature using the BlackBerry Manager.
This document outlines the expected impact of supporting HTML and RTF email messages on the
BlackBerry Enterprise Server. This feature might cause the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to use
increased amounts of CPU resources.
Load test conditions
Load tests were run to determine the impact of supporting HTML and RTF email messages on
BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP6. The load tests were conducted under certain load
conditions; the results experienced in your organization's environment might be different.
During the load tests, only HTML and RTF email messages were used. The messages were sent to
2000 BlackBerry device users.

The message load was applied to an environment that used BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1
SP6 with support for HTML and RTF email messages turned on. The same message load was
applied to an environment with BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP6 with support for HTML
and RTF email messages turned off, and the results were compared. The load tests were run for 4
hours. Measurements were taken for the last 2 hours of the load tests.
The impact on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server varies depending on the workload characteristics of
your organization's environment and on the number of HTML and RTF email messages that users
are likely to send from and receive on their BlackBerry devices.
Production environments are expected to demonstrate a lower impact on the BlackBerry Enterprise
Server than the results discussed in this document, because the number of HTML and RTF email
messages are likely to be less than 100%, and the number of active BlackBerry devices that support
HTML and RTF email messages are likely to be less than 100%.
Results
When HTML and RTF email messages are sent and received, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server uses
up to 58% more CPU resources.
Conclusions
Monitor the CPU resources that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server uses. If the BlackBerry Enterprise
Server uses an unacceptable amount of CPU resources, you can use the BlackBerry Manager to turn
