Gallagher 004171 Kullanım Kılavuzu
The 12V semi-traction power pack of GALLAGHER is the mo-
bile, rechargeable, energy source for your electrical fencing.
The robust construction with components specially selected
for heavy-duty usage makes the power pack extremely relia-
ble. Despite the fact the power pack needs very little main-
tenance, there are nonetheless a number of guidelines that
should be followed to extend the life of the power pack as far
as possible.
CAPACITY
The effective capacity of the Gallagher Power Pack is 50% of
the nominal capacity (XXAh/C20). The effective capacity de-
pends on the current strength the user wants the power pack
to produce. Example calculation:
Say you have an 85Ah power pack and your energiser uses
150mA (0.15A). 85Ah x 50% = 42.5Ah. 42.5Ah ÷ 0.15A = 283
hours = around 11 days. Within 11 days you have to recharge
your power pack, while a less deep discharge will extend the
life of the power pack!
STARTING UP
The 12V Gallagher Power Pack is supplied unfilled and
uncharged. Before using, the power pack has to be filled with
the enclosed battery acid. Fill the battery cells up to the max.
line, after 1 hour check the level again and top up if necessa-
ry. The power pack then has to be slowly charged up. Prefera-
bly use an automatically regulated 12V battery charger. Once
the power pack has reached 14.4V, and the current is close to
zero, then the power pack is ready for use. A new power pack
does not have optimum capacity straightaway, so it should be
recharged sooner the first few times.
RECHARGING AFTER USE
After the power pack has discharged a maximum of 50%
of its capacity it has to be recharged immediately. It is
essential that the power pack is fully recharged. Use a good
charger for this, set between a minimum of 14.4V and a maxi-
mum of 14.8V. The start charge current must be 10% – 15%
of the capacity of the power pack. Make sure the charger is
working properly by measuring the acid strength at the end
of recharging. This should be between 1.27 - 1.28 kg/l. Check
the acid level at regular intervals and top up the electrolyte
when necessary with demineralised water.
Deep discharging of the power pack and/or poor rechar-
ging will shorten the life of your power pack conside-
rably!
DISCONNECTING
If you are not using the energiser, then you should disconnect
the power pack. This also prevents damage due to excessively
deep discharge.
CLEANING
Moisture and dirt on the cover of the power pack between
the terminals will conduct electricity. Even if the power pack
has been disconnected from the electrical system, the power
pack can still discharge because of the electrical seepage
across the cover. It is therefore essential that the power pack
is cleaned properly before it is stored. Cleaning the cover with

water is usually sufficient. The terminals should be smeared
with a layer of acid-free Vaseline so they do not oxidise.
RECHARGING BEFORE STORAGE
After disconnecting the power pack, check the electrolyte
level in the cells. Instead of topping up with demineralised
water as with normal usage, it is recommended that the
electrolyte level is topped up first and then the power pack
recharged before it is stored for winter. Make sure it is not
over-filled because the electrolyte level will rise during char-
ging. Electrolyte topped up to the right level will ensure low
self-discharge. Disconnect the charger and tilt the power pack
a few times from one side to the other after the charging
process has finished to release any gas and to make sure the
acid is mixed properly.
Charging before storage is very important. If it is a cold
winter, the diluted sulphuric acid might suddenly freeze and
damage the power pack. A charged power pack with an acid
strength of 1.28 kg/l has the lowest freezing point: -70°C.
WINTER STORAGE
During winter storage the power pack will need very little
maintenance. If the power pack remains connected to a drip
charger (float mode, 13.2V), for example, the operation of the
system can be checked during winter once every 3 months. If
the float voltage is higher, for example 13.5V, or the power
pack is older, the system should be checked once every 1.5
– 2 months. If the drip voltage is too high (13.8V) for
long periods this will damage the power pack. If the
power pack is NOT connected to a drip charger during winter
storage, the power pack should be charged up once every 3
months whatever the acid strength. It is better to charge the
power pack too much during storage rather than too little.
However, if the acid strength falls below 1.25 kg/l then the
power pack MUST be charged up.
STORAGE CONDITIONS
High temperatures will accelerate unwanted chemical reacti-
ons in the power pack, such as self-discharge. It is therefore
important to keep the battery in a cool, dry, ventilated room.
WARNING
Detonating gas is emitted during charging. Make
sure there is adequate ventilation!
No smoking and keep the power pack away from
flames and heat sources.
Sulphuric acid is a corrosive substance: do not get
acid on your clothes (will cause damage!), and any
contact with skin should be washed off immediately
under a tap. Wear safety glasses.
Any acid in the eyes should be washed off immedia
tely and a doctor contacted.
