1. Print Drivers

control panel, go through the System Settings to

select where the paper size has changed (either

one of the drawers or the bypass) and finally

select the new size.

Misfeeds can be accessed from the right side of

the device or the paper exit area. BLI considers

this design a plus, as opposed to the users hav-

ing to open the front cover, turn various knobs

and navigate through the interior of the copier.

However, the drum is partially exposed within

the misfeed area, leaving it susceptible to dam-

age from users when clearing misfeeds.

The Aficio 1515MF's procedures for replac-

ing toner are simple. The user opens the front

cover of the device, pulls up on a green handle,

presses the release lever and then pulls out the

toner-bottle holder. The user then slides the new

toner bottle into place and presses down on the

lever to secure it. However, the toner bottle

itself does not lock into place. As a result, the

toner bottle may have a tendency to spray and

can be messy to replace.

Print Drivers

A wide range of print drivers are available with

the Ricoh print controller, including PCL 5e,

PCL 6, Mini, Ricoh's Refined Print Command

Stream (RPCS) and optional Adobe PostScript

imagesetters, the very high-resolution printers

used by service bureaus to produce camera-

ready copy.

Most of the features required for a typical

print job are available from the main tab of the

PCL 6 driver (used in BLI testing), including

quantity and layout. When choosing settings

for Job Type, Orientation, Layout, Page Order

and Duplex on the main tab, users can opt for

using either pull-down menus or selectable

icons. Although users must go to the Paper

tab in order to select paper source and output

destination, they can do so either by using the

pull-down menus or by pointing and clicking

on a graphical image of the unit that highlights

the selected paper source and output destina-

tion. By choosing Paper Selection and then

User Defined Pages under the Paper tab, users

can select up to three paper sources for a single

print job when the optional paper drawer is

added.

In addition, the Aficio 1515MF's PCL 6 driver

eliminates the confusion for users determining

whether to use the collate function of the print

driver or the application in use, as it can be set

to default to one or the other. Further, the driver

offers a Custom Paper Size selection for users

to select non-standard paper sizes. The Print

Quality tab of the print driver allows the user

to select Resolution, Edge Smoothing, Toner

Saving mode, Graphics mode, Edge to Edge

Print and TrueType mode. Drawbacks of the

PCL 6 driver include its lack of secure print,

scheduled print or proof print options. Further,

the PCL 6 driver does not offer autoconfigu-

ration capability to automatically detect the

device's accessories.

Ricoh's RPCS is an intuitive, icon-based print

driver that allows users to create, save and share

output icons based on their specific job require-

ments. When the Add/Change Custom Settings

key is selected, users are presented with a new

window in which they can program all their
