Thank you for purchasing the Astro Tray Model EP-17. The EP-17 is a professional-grade, ultra heavy-duty combination eyepiece tray and tripod leg stabilizer
for use with any tripod that has a ¼-inch hole in the center of the tripod leg support arms.
The EP-17 serves two functions: a) it can hold 17 eyepieces - eight 2-inch eyepieces and nine 1.25-inch eyepieces, and b) it improves the stability of the
associated tripod legs via four attachment points.
The EP-17 is constructed from heavy-duty steel and has a durable matt black UV-stabilized powder coat paint finish. Stainless steel hardware is used to
attach the EP-17 plate to up to four points on the horizontal tripod leg support arms. A stainless steel eye bolt is also provided to allow you to hang
additional weight from the center of the tripod. Supported tripods include:
TM
Oberwerk
Wood Tripod (Standard and Tall)
TM
GSO SkyView
Alt-Az Tripod
TM
Astro-Tech Voyager
Other tripods may also be supported that are not listed above. The EP-17 requires the tripod to have a ¼-inch hole in the center of the tripod leg support
arms and the tripod must also be wide enough to accommodate the 12-inch diameter of the EP-17.
How to Use the EP-17:
Always attach the EP-17 to your tripod before you mount any other equipment on the tripod.
Only store eyepieces on the EP-17 after the EP-17 and telescope/binoculars are mounted on the tripod and you are ready to begin your viewing
session. When you are finished viewing, always remove your eyepieces from the EP-17 first, before you remove any other equipment from the
tripod.
1.
Ensure that the tripod legs are spread as far apart as possible. In this position, the tripod leg support arms should be horizontal to the ground (or
close to horizontal).
2.
Place the EP-17 plate on top of the tripod leg support arms and rotate the EP-17, as needed, to align the center hole of the EP-17 and the three
small slots (located near the outer edge of the EP-17) with their respective holes in the tripod leg support arms. You may have to rock the tripod
supports arms back and forth slightly to align the outer EP-17 slots with the mounting holes in the arms.
3.
Use either the larger supplied bolt or the long eye bolt with two washers and the larger wing nut to secure the center of the EP-17 to the tripod
support arms. The eyebolt lets you hang additional weight below the support arms to further stabilize the tripod.
4.
Next, secure the outer three slot holes in the EP-17 plate to the tripod leg support arms using the smaller supplied screws, washers and wing nuts.
Do not over-tighten any of the wing nuts. (The assembled EP-17 looks cleaner with the wing nuts positioned below the support arms.)
5.
Mount your telescope (or binoculars) onto the tripod.
6.
Finally, place your eyepieces into the appropriate EP-17 tray holes and enjoy your viewing session!
NOTE: If your total mount weight is close to the limit of the tripod, remember that an EP-17 with multiple eyepieces (especially 2-inch eyepieces!) can add a
fair amount of weight to the over-all mount weight. For most users, this is not much of an issue. However, as a general "rule-of-thumb", keep in mind that
most tripods can only effectively support about half of their specified weight limit (e.g., a tripod that is rated to support 20 pounds can effectively support
loads up to around 10 pounds). There are exceptions to this, of course, so please contact your tripod manufacturer if in doubt.
