the ground quickly. If you raise the throttle slowly, you risk the quadcopter sticking on one side
(especially if you are taking off from long grass or mud) causing it to takeoff at an angle.
• Try to avoid hovering close to the ground, as turbulence will make it harder to control. Instead
try to hover 3-4 feet up in the air.
• Maintaining visual contact with the quadcopter is the best assurance of a safe flight. Don't let it
get too far away from you, as you are more likely to confuse its orientation.
• As quadcopters are symmetrical, correctly orientating them is one of the most challenges
aspects of flying them. If you lose orientation or get confused in flight, don't panic and
impulsively close the throttle. Instead make an aileron input; if you input right and it goes right
it's flying with its back towards you in the normal orientation. If you input right and it goes left
it's flying nose in towards you.
• Avoid sudden or extreme transmitter control stick deflections; move the control stick in small
measured increments.
Practice these exercises to help you master the flight controls.
Skill 1: Hover
Your first step is to maintain a consistent altitude while keeping quadcopter oriented so the rear arms
face towards you. Practice taking off, rising to a comfortable hovering altitude, and keeping quadcopter
in place without allowing for any changes in orientation or position. If quadcopter drifts forward,
backward, left, or right, or rotates clockwise or counterclockwise, use the corresponding stick controls
to correct. Note that it's best to practice in calm conditions, as wind will cause the quadcopter to drift
and hence require you to correct for it.
Skill 2: Box
When you feel comfortable with your ability to maintain a consistent hovering altitude, try flying a box
pattern. To practice this, take off, reach your hovering altitude, then fly forward, right, backward, and
left by making small adjustments to the right stick. Make sure to fly the box in front of you and not
around you. Use the left stick to rotate quadcopter so the rear arms face towards you and front arms
face away from you for the duration of the exercise.
Skill 3: Figure Eight
When you can confidently navigate a box while maintaining altitude and orientation, try flying a figure-
eight pattern. Once again, make sure to fly in front of you and not around you. Use the right stick to
create a smooth flight path while using the left stick to correct orientation and maintain altitude.
