However, the data center issue that beckoned
the most immediate attention was the lack of
remote access. Although PSCUFS's IT
department had a 24/7 computer operations
staff available to handle the majority of
after-hours issues, engineers were not on-site
around the clock. Often engineers would
need to make a special trip to the lab in the
middle of the night to troubleshoot problems
or perform software/configuration updates.
The antiquated technology resulted in a very
poor allocation of PSCUFS's talented IT force.
Solving the problems
To improve data center operations, Peter
Krisch, an Internet systems engineer for
PSCUFS, consulted Bill Rose at Corporate
Express, a PSCUFS vendor. After a careful
analysis of the situation, Rose connected
PSCUFS with Avocent Corporation. To jump-
start the relationship, Rose arranged for
John Fauteux, Avocent district sales manager,
to conduct an on-site demo of Avocent's
DS1800 and CPS1600 KVM switching systems.
"The problems and frustrations experienced
by PSCUFS in dealing with a growing data
center are common in today's business
world," said Fauteux. "The key was to find
which of our product solutions would be the
best fit in their environment."
After working through a few issues related to
the data center's complex and secure infra-
structure, Avocent engineers completed a
successful implementation of the DS1800
and CPS1600 technologies. Initial problems
experienced with DSView, Avocent's point-
and-click Windows application, were quickly
solved with a software modification.
"The support provided by Bill Rose and
John Fauteux is phenomenal," said Krisch.
"From the initial sales talks through the
implementation, they were with us every step
of the way and, most importantly, still are!"
Remote access provided by Avocent's DS1800
has dramatically changed the way PSCUFS
supports its network. For example, an
engineer in the Florida office can now work
on a server/device in the Arizona office or
vice versa.
"The DS1800 not only improved the efficiency
of our data center but it also improved
engineer morale," said Krisch. "Engineers
are now able to address off-hour server
issues from the comfort of home instead of
having to drive to the data center." It also
allows PSCUFS to better service their credit
unions because technical support staff can
directly interface with their large and
complex network from any remote location.
"Given that you have a remote connection to
the network, the DS1800, along with DSView,
provides for 24/7 access to all network
servers and devices from anywhere, any-
place, anytime," said Krisch.
Solutions improve data center
Avocent technologies also greatly improved
data center service during the average
workday. The DS1800 coupled with DSView
provides PSCUFS engineers with the ability
to access every server in the data center
from a dedicated console at their desk.
Engineers no longer have to share keyboards
and monitors. They are able to eliminate the
numerous daily maintenance trips to the data
center. PSCUFS was able to significantly
conserve valuable data center real estate,
reduce cooling costs, extend battery life for
UPS's and give a more "showcase" look to
the data center.
Additionally, the DS1800 and the CPS1600
seamlessly integrated into their multi-
platform environment. Using just one
interface, PSCUFS is now able to quickly
and reliably access every device in its
network, including Novell servers, Windows
NT servers, Sun servers, routers, switches,
managed hubs and firewalls.
Security concerns were also answered by
Avocent technologies. The Authentication
Server introduced a simple but secure way
to protect PSCUFS servers from unautho-
rized access. Using the existing Microsoft
Domain, PSCUFS created different server
access groups. Each group was then
assigned to a DS1800 port using the Avocent
DSAdmin utility. This provides PSCUFS with
transparent user authentication for each
specific device attached to the DS1800,
regardless of location.

Mike Hapner, director of enterprise systems
for PSCUFS, is extremely pleased with the
solution implemented by Krisch and
Avocent. "The end result of this enriched
access method is a more reliable platform
for our credit unions and their members,"
said Hapner.
